| This song is pretty strongly from Kozelek's perspective. The fact that Clay was hated more than Liston is significant to a thinking man who is a boxer, which Kozelek is. That a black man was more hated for having beliefs that were non-negotiable than for being a criminal is a bit of a puzzler. The song is named for Judas Preist's guitarist, a band I don't know him to be a fan of but his love of metal and hard rock is well known. | |

others have touched on the major points but to sum up- the song seems to be about meeting, befriending, and parting ways with richard (hell). they were childhood friends and both moved to NYC to make it as poets (@Nimbie, he may have read the poem you speak of, as that was his chosen profession). their friendship took on as they started television together. also from what i've read they were shooting up together too. i think the lines - "Then Richie, Richie said: "Hey man let's dress up like cops Think of what we could do!" But something, something said "you better not. I stood up and walked, right out of the arms of venus de milo." refer either metaphorically or literally to an experience where verlaine saw that hell was a little more "wild" than he wanted to be. it's a fact that verlaine kicked hell out of the band. |

| allmusic lists this as one of their darkest songs. i think the opposite. it's meaning is very simple, with the inclusion of a clarinet as a character only confusing the simple attraction at the heart of the song slightly. | |
