Jay Brannan – 26-Hour Day Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is an incredible allegory that invites his listeners to think about issues on a global context, a regional context, and a personal context. He presents these issues that mainstream America understands and continually debates equivocally and with bias, but there is a lingering subtext permeating the lyrics: what about gay-stream America. We get these lines like "Instead of making friends with Dorothy they're thrown to the tornado," which alludes to the cliched metaphor referencing the gay population and its inability to be accepted by the country as a whole. With each issue that he presents (i.e. - abortion, women voting, elected officials, etc...), there is a general tone or subtext bringing the listeners attention to the gay community. His stanzas act dually to provide the listener with this secondariness, and he emphasizes the undertone through his elongating or abruption of certain words and syllables as he sings.

This is a rough analysis that needs a lot more thought and time to develop, but I believe that i have made my point clear: that this song is meant to be interpreted as an allegory for the inequality the gay community experiences. Feel free to argue.
