this is an indisputable fact, as you can see in the MANY MANY portland references in his songs. for example: in the early 90's he shared a house on SE 16th Ave with friends, very close to Division St. (division day/punch and judy) SE Division St also happens to be almost exactly 4 blocks north from SE Powell blvd (hence 6th and Powell, Needle in the Hay, Self-titled) his house on Division was located 2 blocks from Elliott St., (most likely the inspiration for the uncommon spelling of his pen-name) Southwest Condor Ave. is a street in Portland (Condor Ave, Roman Candle) NE Alameda St, Another street in Portland (Alameda Either/Or) Rose Festival, an annual festival in Portland (aka Rose City) which includes the Rose Parade (Rose Parade, Either/Or) Pioneer Courthouse Square, this is basically Portland's city-center, which is notorious for it's large amount of drug addicts hanging out and either looking for or selling smack and other drugs (Riot Coming, New Moon, "I met a girl on the square Who showed me how to kill my cares") He might've moved to different cities during his life, but Elliott Smith pretty much embodied Portland as a whole and vice versa.. Portland is a very rainy/overcast/depressing place, as you can hear in his voice in Roman Candle, Self-titled, and Either/Or, very plainly, and even while living in New York and LA, his writings still contained many portland-esque feelings, emotions, and even literal references |
