To me, I draw a lot of similarities between this song and "Lolita" (where their ages were 36 &12). I view it as a love song from Humbert's perspective about his overwhelming love for Lolita. The portion about them finding a place to be "together but alone" would describe their road trip to find a place to settle down after her mother's death. "If you go, please let me know" would be when Lolita left Humbert for the child pornographer but didn't tell him, causing him to worry she had been abducted and trying to hunt her down. Finally, the "running with a heart on fire" depicts Humbert's betrayal and passion at the end when Lolita contacts him, and subsequently abandons him, leaving him to seek revenge. |
