Demi Lovato – Heart Attack Lyrics 10 years ago
@[WoozyMan:8190] "It's about a girl who has confidence getting guys she isn't that interested in. However when it comes to guys she's pretty interested in then all her confidence goes away as she doesn't know how to handle potentials she sees of high value. I think it's a good insight on "woman empowerment..."

I agree on your lyric interpretation. Only its not just women who feel this way and go thru this. Believe me. This is pretty much the story of my love life lol I've basically always had to settle for girls I haven't been super physically attracted to. And I think a lot of guys can relate, especially those of us who are a little shy, sensitive, introverted, self esteem issues, and/or socially awkward and have difficulty expressing ourselves verbally in social situations. Though maybe not a lot who are brave enough to put themselves out there and admit it. But I just see it as another aspect of the human condition, so I never saw what was particularly wrong with it and never saw it as strictly a "girl issue" or "guy issue". People aren't perfect and, deep down, I really believe men and women aren't that different. So I never got the point of gender roles, etc.

Anyway, I especially like the line: "When you come around, I get paralyzed. And every time I try to be myself, it comes out wrong like a cry for help. It’s just not fair, pain’s more trouble than love is worth. I gasp for air, it feels so good, but you know it hurts." Especially the part about "Every time I try to be myself, it comes out wrong like a cry for help." Which is probably me on the internet more times than I'd like to admit lol But yeah, it just goes back to that "difficulty expressing yourself socially" thing that can be part of the human condition for both males and females. Story of my (love)life lol

Finally, would just like to say that even though I'm a guy who's probably a bit older (39) than Demi's target music demo, I'm a recent fan of her music, I think she's really hot (curves - my kind of woman AKA the kind I can't talk to lol), and most importantly - I think she's a great inspiration to people everywhere the way she just kinda bravely puts her flaws out there. She's definitely inspired me in that way.

Ok, enough rambling...but I don't post here much at all, so I had a lot to get out of my system lol Just wanted to stick up for the flawed/awkward/misfit guys like me out there, as well as the flawed/awkward/misfit girls, since I see a lot of people on the net trying to be "alphas" or whatever, but not a lot of people trying to stick up for people like us. The other 99% or 1% or whatever the percentage is that's a little different from the herd (just like Demi). So hopefully someone reads this and feels less alone with what they're going thru :-)

Sugarcult – Stuck In America Lyrics 12 years ago
The narrator feels frustrated, confined, and lost living in America, having difficulty finding his place in this modern age as many of us do (God knows I'm going through it atm if not my whole life). Nothing too deep or that hasn't already been said before, but catchy, fun, and rebellious...nothing wrong with that. Just wanted to weigh in because I'm definitely relating this week, Fourth of July week, as I'm an American and feeling stuck here, as I'm pining for a girl from Canada (and its Canada Day), "I'm different and you're distant". Everyone's all about fireworks, "everybody's talking 'bout blowing up the neighborhood, everybody's gonna watch it burn today. Everybody's talking 'bout waking up the neighborhood" and I'm just like whatever, "I'm still trying to escape ... All I ever wanted was to get away".

Benny Mardones – Into The Night Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with itzed, too. Its that Puritan thing we're still trying to get over here in America. And the hypocritical thing is we're also the ones saying "be young at heart" and "you're only as old as you feel". So if you can be young at heart, it only makes sense you could fall for a younger, more innocent person who hasn't become completely jaded by this materialistic, superficial society yet lol There's also the saying "age ain't nothing but a number" - I agree!

A lot of times people just want to put an easy label on things without looking below the surface and truly getting to know a person. I can actually kinda relate to this song. I've always dated women my age, but I also have a kind of celeb crush/love thing on a 16 year old girl. I was a fan of her work for years, saw some recent pix of her "grown up" and it captured my heart - sor-ry lol You don't get to choose who your heart falls for. And she's Canadian - as far as I know, 16 is the age of consent there, so if I moved there, would I no longer be sinful in thought? ;-) See, morality can be tricky, not so black and white, is it?

As someone else stated here, 16 is not a child. Pedophiles are attracted to pre-pubescents. Have any of you actually abandoned your computer screens and been to your local mall and seen the average 16 year old? lol And if people mention the "emotional/mental maturity" thing, teenagers are often more mature than we give them credit for. Without being, like I said, completely jaded yet. Hey, where I live, the mentality sucks, all about money, status, power, so innocence is going to appeal to me lol And like the song said, I'd totally wait for her, as if I ever have a shot ;-)

So, in closing, I'll say those laws about 18 were written by MAN, not God, so itzed is right - no sin. People are so close minded, hateful, and judgmental toward anything they see has "weird" or outside the norm. They should get over themselves. Makes me feel like I'm still in high school. Ironic, huh? ;-)

Matthew Sweet – Sick Of Myself Lyrics 15 years ago
Probably my all time favorite song. Power Pop heaven. Congrats to mwahahaa for offending and marginalizing shy people, adolescents, and girls all at once - no easy feat lol Seriously though, who can't relate to these lyrics at at least one point in their lives? Not the worst thing in the world to remain in touch with that feeling. So hooray for grown men that still act like shy, self-loathing, adolescent girls over those girls (or guys if that's your thing) that do crazy, terrible, wonderful things to our hearts ;-) Fuck the haters, fuck respect. "Grown men" shouldn't care what others think...except maybe the girl you're crushing/obsessing on ;-) Thank you, Mr. Sweet, for giving us a spokesman.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Name Lyrics 15 years ago
Just to expound a little more on what I said (since apparently you can't edit posts?), its an invitation to have a real life with someone, to be a real person and create a real life making real memories, not a fantasy life where people just like you for your fame and what you can do for them or have done for them lately. A real, if discreet, life. Which in itself might be a fantasy, that "she'd" ever give him the time of day, but that's the offer he's putting on the table. A lot of Goo songs seem to be about that, searching for something real, figuring out what's real among the lies. I do admit that if it is about a former child star, or a guy wanting to help one out, that would certainly limit its relateability lol But that was my first impression in '95 when I first heard it and it still seems right to me. It would definitely be unique subject matter for a song...being sensitive and understanding to that particular breed of people the world has mostly forgotten about.

All the interpretations I've read are very interesting (about it being about orphans, etc). I love songs like this where the interpretation is totally up to the listener. My first impression was its about this guy (the songwriter) who grew up admiring this child star actress, who "grew up too fast" and possibly burned out her fame, and is also possibly an orphan, or was just "orphaned" by fame. And because she attained fame at such an early age, it’s all she knows, so she only has reruns (the movie/tv work she's done that she catches on tv) for memories, in place of real life experiences as a "normal" person.

However, the narrator is offering her sanctuary. He accepts her for who she is, he wants to protect her awhile and take care of her, if she'll let him, but the relationship will be their secret. He won't divulge their relationship or spill her secrets or her name, to protect her reputation. Hide her either from the paparazzi or, if she's not famous anymore, hide her from the pain of coming back down to reality and real problems, the stigma of being "washed up" and trying to start over, having society take you seriously.

Because to him, she is more than a star and he's stayed loyal despite how fleeting fame can be, it can be lonely at the top, it’s definitely lonely now, but he's still there when everyone else has moved on. And if its just one sided and she doesn't see him that way because he's just a regular guy and is beneath her, that's fine, he just wants to be there for her...that's enough for him.

But that's just one interpretation :-) Some of that has been touched on before here, but other stuff seems to be completely unique to me, like the "star" being a former child star. Oh, and the actor doesn’t even have to be female, it could be a dude the guy admires platonically and wants to help him out through a rough patch. I was just using the example of an actress for convenience sake...not that I’ve ever felt that way ;-)

So many great lines in this song. “Scars are souvenirs you never lose...the past is never far.” “Don’t it make you sad to know that life is more than who we are.” For the latter, my interpretation is that you can be a wonderful person, but in the cold eyes of the world, it doesn’t matter, what matters is how useful you are at fulfilling a function, i.e. your job/career. All the things that keep humans from having honest, genuine connections with each other. You’re basically a number. If you falter, someone else will take your place and you’ll be forgotten. So if you’re seen as “washed up”, it doesn’t matter how wonderful a person you are. Pretty sobering stuff...great song.
