First off, I love both versions of this song, but I think I prefer "New Regrets" version just a tad bit more... I can't exactly place why... Anyways, my opinion is that this song is just basically about general change and independence. This is literally a very basic pop song. (I still like it very much, because I love Patrick's work) but my thoughts on it are very simple and the song is pretty self explanatory to me, but I'll break down what I get from it anyways... and it's just my opinion... "every word's a new regret if you say it right" could mean that anything can be taken out of context, or be misunderstood "every wound can be forgotten in the right light" could mean that there's always something that can take your mind off of a current situation or that there's always someone else out there with a worse situation... "oh nostalgia I don't need you anymore" could mean that he doesn't need to try to go back to the way he used to be, or what he misses... he can be a new person now (and that could also be read into a bit deeper... like he doesn't have to be associated with Fall Out Boy just to do what he loves) "cause the salad days are over and the meat is at my door" could be taken very literally about the weight loss that he's been through or possibly not being a vegan any more, but I like to look at it like he's saying that his options aren't limited any longer (to doing what the band needed/wanted him to do), his opportunities have just opened up the chorus is strictly about independence to me so i won't elaborate "depression is a little bit like happy hour right? it's always got to be happening somewhere on any given night" he could be saying that depression is over-rated, over diagnosed, over abundant and that there's too much of it going on and he doesn't need it in his life... or that's not what the big picture is about "oh nostalgia I don't need you anymore. I just hope, my perfect stranger, that my kids look more like yours" the second part of this line is a bit tricky in the meaning for me, but the very first time i saw it when he posted it on his website, i just thought it was one of the most romantic things ever, in a very simple and literal way. He's saying to the person he wants to love and have children with that he wants their kids to look like her... a very beautiful way of saying, 'I want to be the father of your children/I love you'...? I think this last little paragraph goes together very well, and could be explained all at once with the same message, but I’ll break it down by line anyways. "cause I had a little bit of bad luck, no wonder this crumbling world's stuck" bad things can happen to anyone, and it’s no surprise that the world is the way it is today… “a little sweetness keeps just out of reach” He can’t quite get what it is that he truly wants… maybe he loves someone that is still kind of stringing him along...? “Cause compassion is something that they just don’t teach” A lot of people now-a-days are very selfish, and this could mean people as a whole, or a specific person. But someone isn’t seeing eye to eye with him and he doesn’t understand why they can’t empathize… why aren’t people able to? Why does it seem like no one cares to anymore? |
