Obviously about Jesus, not necessarily about Christianity, but definitely about Jesus and seemingly in a good light. "Jesus will come through the ground so dirty with worms in his hair and a hand so sturdy" This seems like a more literal reference to Jesus's resurrection. Coming back from being buried (dirt, worms) instead of the traditional thought of him buried in a tomb and disappearing from said tomb. "and jesus will dance while we drink his wine, with soldiers and thieves and a sword in his side" Jesus gave his blood and body, wine represent his blood, bread his body. Jesus was know to drink wine. Most Christians drink it every Sunday. "With soldiers and thieves" probably referring to the fact that Jesus accepted all kinds, from beggars to prostitutes, soldiers to thieves. Or this could refer to his crucifixion, where he was crucified on the cross by roman soldiers along with two thieves. After he was on the crucified, they stabbed his side with a spear (sword in his side) to finish him off. I also feel "jesus came up through the ground so dirty" could be trying to make make him more human, just as dirty and capable of sin as we are. Or that he died for our sins and accepted them onto himself, thus making him "dirty." They are NOT a christian band, as the quotes have said before, They do not claim to be a christian band, they're not creed. The singer was raised in the christian faith, wrote all the songs in the same week (which is explains the recurring theme in the album), and said himself that it just naturally comes out in writing. But listening to the rest of the album the view towards faith and Jesus seem to be positive. You don't have to be a Christian to believe in Jesus or to sing about him. |
