Muse – Uprising Lyrics 12 years ago
Some people take this song to be about rebelling from government tyranny, sometimes specific regimes, current and past. I think that the tyranny is in this song is far more insidious; the enslavement of the will. So subtle and complete is the control over us that we embrace it, actively pursue it, and at the same time don't understand it.

I'm talking about how our desires are manipulated to serve corporate interest. Our culture of greed, and saturation in advertisements have reduced our impulse control and made compulsive non-thinking consumers of us. They convince us that we want the garbage that they sell, and we help them do it. We actively expose ourselves to their mind controlling advertisements, we tease ourselves, beat ourselves up when we can't afford it. We are severely addicted, and don't know it.

We dull our minds with their drugs, waste our time with their television and video games, never reaching our full potential, and rarely experiencing the things in life that are most rewarding.

To me, this song is about freeing the human will, training ourselves to desire the things that are genuinely desirable, and overcoming the true oppressor.

Volbeat – The Nameless One Lyrics 12 years ago
Wow, I feel very nerdy for coming up with this explanation of the song, but I think it's about a lich-lord and two of his subjects. A lich is a special type of undead creature that voluntarily gave up his natural life for immortality. Lich's unlike other undead are very intelligent, sometimes inhumanly so, and often command legions of lesser undead. Look at the Wikipedia page for an explanation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lich

There are at least 3 main characters in this song. There is the "outlaw bandit" (who I think is also the the "nameless one", and I think that this guy is the lich-lord). The other two characters are the deceased couple that are in love. Anyway, I think that the dead couple are being called back to life (undeath) to serve the nameless one, (the lich-lord/outlaw bandit). Normally, zombies don't experience love, but during this current undead craze, it's not unheard of.

Of course symbolically, this song explores love, and alternative lifestyles (this sounds like I'm describing homsexuality, but that's not my intent).

Misfits – Dig Up Her Bones Lyrics 12 years ago
I have 2 interpretations of this song, the literal, and the metaphorical.

The literal:
The female he is singing of is some kind of demon that can become whatever you desire in order to seduce you. She essentially makes your dreams come true. However, this isn't really a good thing, and you become addicted to her, and lose control. By the time you realize the trap you are in, it is almost impossible to escape, and you have to do some kind of bizarre ritual involving digging up her bones to get rid of her. Once you do this, and dig up her bones, "horrible things" take her away.

Anything, anyplace, anywhere, lies and secrets, etc. are all about how she can be whatever you desire, and that the truth means nothing to her. In the middle of this, it mentions a door as a way in, because he wants to be with her, but then he asks "or is it a way back out?" because a part of him knows he needs to escape her clutches.

At one point he calls her a demon, and knows of her "death's place". At this point, he knows her needs her out of his life, and he knows of this weird ritual he needs to do to get rid of her, digging up her bones. The details of the ritual are vague.

In the chorus, he is asking for strength and guidance to carry out the ritual to banish her back to hell.

The metaphorical:

He is in a relationship with a lying, destructive woman that he is addicted to. A part of him wants to be with her, a part of him knows he needs out of the relationship. All of the Anythings, anywheres, etc, are about how deceptive she is, and how he gets tangled up in it, and even enjoys it.

The bizarre ritual involving herculean effort is about the hard part of breaking up with someone. No matter how bad the relationship is, he's still addicted.

Bad Religion – Spirit Shine Lyrics 15 years ago
I think that "spirit shine" is Greg's term for people that always seem to be motivated by their religious beliefs. Like someone who is "on fire" for Jesus; everything they do is dictated by their beliefs.

some qualities of someone who has the "spirit shine":
1. will turn the other cheek
2. will give away any excess money
3. lives unselfishly (I think that in Graffin's view, some selfishness is a good thing)
4. Lives by faith.

I think what BR was trying to say is that this behavior suggests an underlying problem. (tortured mind) and that ultimately it's effect is bad (render you blind)
