Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #2 (Laika) Lyrics 15 years ago
Also, in the music video whenever the mention Laika they show a speeding bullet thing with the word "LAIKA" on it, this has to be a reference to the rocket the dog laika was sent up in.

Bruce Springsteen – Badlands Lyrics 15 years ago
This song really speaks to me, I'm a college freshman struggling with a depression that started a few years ago, one of the main reasons im depressed is because im disgusted with the way the world around me had become and the direction its going, we all live in the Badlands. This song taught me that I (we) need to endure the badlands until we find what really makes us happy, which is possible even in this mess.

Arcade Fire – No Cars Go Lyrics 15 years ago
I think the place they are talking about is limbo, a place where no material things go (cars, planes) but only your soul. Its a place where a decision is made, you go tom heaven or you go to hell. Now thats not to say they are literally talking about limbo, but I think thats the idea.

What they are literally talking about may be a point in your life where you have to decide how your going to live the rest of your life, in heaven or hell. "Between the click of the light and the start of the dream" refers to the time spent laying in bed from when you tuen the light out till when you actually fall asleep and start dreaming. Again this span of time is a sort of limbo, you are about ot fall asleep and either dream (heaven) or have nightmares(hell). In real life, its about how there a point in everyones life when they need to make a decision about their lifestyle, are you going to live you dreams? or are you going to make the wrong choice and live in Hell for the rest of your life?

And finally, they are calling everyone to recognize this point in your life so you have time to think about it when your young so when you make the decision you are already well informed about how you want to live the rest of your life.

This song really speaks to me and my fellow college students.

Arcade Fire – Rebellion (Lies) Lyrics 15 years ago
I accidently hit enter before I was done:(

I also wanted to point out the verse

"People say that your dreams
Are the only things that save you
Come on baby, in our dreams
We can live our misbehavior"

Its about the trend of getting through the day, and then escaping to sleep when we get home, and how that seems to be the only thing thats saving us. The third and fourth line says that no, we cant be saved by our dreams because when we dream anything is possible, we can fuck around all we want and things still turn out good. Its therefore bad to escape to your dreams because taking that "superman mentality" into the real world will in fact kill you.

Arcade Fire – Rebellion (Lies) Lyrics 15 years ago
Here's my take:

I think this song is pretty straight forward. Its about how our world is very fucked up and our dreams never really come true. "Sleepin in is givin in" means that when we sleep, we escape to our dream so we don't have to face reality, so to sleep in and hide from the world is to give in to the pressure of our world instead of making the best of it.

At the end "heres the sun...heres the moon its alright" means that even though our world is messep up (when were awake, hence the sun) and our dream world when we are asleep is great, the fact is that no matter which world we live in its gonna be alright, albeit not perfect.

Arcade Fire – The Suburbs Lyrics 15 years ago
Here's my interpretation:

'The Suburbs' is a song about my generation (im 18). Its about how we grow up with the "superman mentality" that nothing can hurt us, even though we see horrible things happen its always "well that would never happen to me. This mentality is why my generation is so f'ed up! The suicide rates for my age group are sickening, suicide and drug overdose are two of the main causes of death in my generation, along with homicide. It helps to watch the music video, in it you see a military presence in a suburban neighborhood, there is an actual war going on in the suburbs. Its all a metaphor for the war my generation is in with itself. WE think we are safe here, yet a child in El Salvador has a higher life expectation than a child born in the USA today. "the walls we built in the 70's finally fall" refers to how this trend of raising your kids in such a protective manner started in the 70's, the walls refer to the protection and falling down refers to us realizing that our mentality is unreal, and it has caused us to take a huge downfall. It caused a downfall because since we think were so safe, we do stupid things thinking nothign can happen, like drugs, or film a gay kid having sex and putting on the internet, because we think nothing we do will ever cause something horrible to happen.

This song is VERY powerful. Again, the music video helps. Seeing a military state like that in the video shocked me, then realized that its actually the reality, we live in a war zone, most people just dont see it.

Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #2 (Laika) Lyrics 15 years ago
I think more emphasis should be placed on the connections to the story of Laika, the Russian space dog, as that is both the title and main part of the chorus.

Laika was a stray dog found on the streets of Moscow and was sent into space on Sputnik 2. The Russians wanted to see if a living thing could survive a space launch, and dog was chosen because the animal had to be able to be trained to do certain things by itself. The Russians had no intention of retrieving Laika, they wanted to see how long she could last in space. She eventually died from overheating when a cooling system failed. The experiment was successful however, Laika survived the launch and was doing fine in orbit until the cabin overheated.

I think the song had a LOT to do with this. IN the beginning "he scratched our names out of all his letters" could refer to how at first, the Russians would not release information on how exactly Laika died. First they said she was euthanized when the cooling system failed but in an official report later they revealed how shed died of overheating. Perhaps Alexander was sent away from his family for some reason and the family was embarrassed of the real reason so they made up a story. "Dont die or dry up" could refer to how Laika died from overheating. I agree that "bit by a vampire" is a heroin reference, mythically when bit by a vampire you become a vampire and must live on blood, something needed to survive. Heroin addiciton is very powerful, like being bit by a vampire, once you try heroin your likely to become an addict forever. You then live on heroin which could be the blood because heroin runs in an addicts blood 24/7 and they need heroin all the time or they are in big trouble. "caught his tears in a cup" could be a metaphor for the stuggles of heroin addiciotn, like the time when alex couldent get drugs and went into withdrawals. Making him "drink it" could be his family/siblings taking one last chance to save him, by showing him whats happening to himself and they he will die if he doesnt accept that and change.

But also, its important to realize that its easy to draw comparisons to something. You can take any sotry that is remotely similar and find comparisons. I think we can all agree that Laika refers to the dog and there are at least some comparisons to the story of Laika the space dog because the name Laika is pretty specific to the story of the dog. After that, if being "bit by a vampire" really is about heroin, then the rest of the song is probably about alex and his addiction because in reality Heroin addiction takes over your life and there isn't much else in your life.

The end part about the neighbors, I think its pretty strait forward. His neighbors would see when the police had to come to alex's house and gossip about Alex and his family afterwords.

So that's my interpretation. The one thing I'm sure about is that Laika refers to the space dog. The rest of the song im kinda sure about but not positive.
