i never asked you for a sailboat in the yard that fancy dress to wear or a ceiling made of stars and all i got was just this "a sailboat in the yard" -I think the refers to the American dream of having a white picket fence life with the perfect man "that fancy dress to wear" -I think the fancy dress is a metaphor for a wedding dress. "ceiling made of stars" -I think this means "the whole perfect world" In general, I think this song is about a girl who has given everything to someone she loves without asking for a type of title in return. It could be a lover not asking for an established relationship, or a relationship where she hasn't asked for him to think about marriage. Either way, it seems to be a song about someone who has enjoyed all the simple pleasures in life with another man and never tripped up on complications or made any sort of demand. Very moving song |
