That's quite a strawman you've got there rebellumberjack. I'm sick of the the Vampire Weekend comparisons too, but that's no reason to assume things about the intentions of the band in naming themselves Vampire Weekend. Much to your chagrin (sorry you don't get to hate them for this anymore), their name comes from an amateur horror film one of the members of the band (not sure which one) made a few years before the band was formed (the movie was called "Vampire Weekend"). |

Agreed with all of the people who disagree. Additionally, Born Ruffians have been writing music much longer than Vampire Weekend. If anything you should be comparing Vampire Weekend to Born Ruffians. (Even though I don't really think they sound alike either.) |

I think the song isn't him being sarcastic, more mournful. It's a first person narrative of a young man who starts out his independent life trying to find a meaning. His intentions are pure and a bit naive, and as the song goes on, he becomes more and more selfish and superficial. Compare what he wants and needs in each of the verses compared to the preceding verse, and that becomes quite apparent to me. I might be off-base though. Sorry, Luke. |
