it is about drug addiction, hence the burden in the hand is a syringe. The chorus "I shot my love today, would you cry for me?" addresses the listener, or society, and views towards those who are addicted. Other lyrics describe how the person is trying to stay off drugs (desert themes and being parched) but eventually "she" gets the upper hand ("I lost my head again"), even though the addict knows this is destroying him/her ("kill health, yourself, everything you love").
