I believe this song talks about giving into peer pressure, and someone losing a lover to the "in crowd". Especially the lyrics, "Everyone loves a man, who lets the hardest people build him up and cut him down to lovable size" I believe this means that everyone loves a person who can be cut down to conform. "I've seen the hardest people soften in the spotlight Won't you stop and breathe, tell me what you want to feel" He's questioning, "How do YOU want to feel?" & also saying that the subject gives in under pressure, which is the spotlight. "Baby I'd leave you for the person you used to be" Pretty self explanatory, he longs for the subject to be who they used to be. "You are so young, so feel alive And one day you will live on your own" He's saying that you pretty much have your own life, you're young, live for yourself and you will be more successful and independent. Overall this song has such a sad, nostalgic message to it, but it's nonetheless absolutely positive with it's message. I admit to giving into to pressure to fit in, and I haven't exactly "lived for myself", and I completely understand the disappointment he feels when he explains how the person has changed, and he longs for the days when the person lived their own life, not when someone lived it for them. Beautiful song, one of my favorites by Voxtrot. |
