| Sugarcult – Pretty Girl (The Way) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I believe this song is being told from the point of view of a guy who is watching his best friend, Pretty Girl, fall in love with another guy that she's dying to trust ("Pretty Girl is suffering as he confesses everything"), but is too afraid to. She's probably been in an abusive relationship ("Her killer instinct tells her to be aware of evil men") and is hesitant to let anyone in. Our narrator is relaying the story of her falling in love from the sidelines. I suspect he's in love with Pretty Girl, but he's stuck in the friend zone or doesn't want to ruin her chance at happiness by confessing his feelings. | |
| Oingo Boingo – Dead Man's Party Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| To me, Dead Man's Party is more of a story set to music than a song. I see a ghost of someone recently deceased. He doesn't yet realize he's dead, so he's walking down the street with a "dead man over his shoulder," aka his spirit guide. When he turns around to confront the dead man, he realizes he's dead and gets thrown into the spirit world. The invitation is more like the acceptance into the spirit world, crossing over, if you will. Since he's recently dead, he has to wait his turn (like the waiting room of Purgatory in the movie Beetlejuice.) In the meantime, he talks to the other recently deceased and learns how they died. Finally, the man gets accepted into the "Dead Man's Party," AKA the afterlife. He parties and has fun, but he gets tired of it and goes back to Earth to try and talk to the people he left behind. | |
| Elbow – Red Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| This song makes me think of a guy who wants to date a girl (probably much younger than he is), but she's got problems...like she's been abused or something and has PTSD. He cares for her a lot and understands that she's got issues that need to be worked through before either of them could even think of having a relationship. The "Put you to bed, you can let it all go. You've been playing too rough lately" makes me think that the girl is relapsing, she's having flashbacks of what happpened to her. "Burning too bright" and "living too fast" brings up the image that she's not seeking help like she should, she's trying to "fix" herself by doing stupid/dangerous things to forget about her abuse. All the while, the man who loves her is trying his best to help her, but it's not getting anywhere. | |
| Billy Joel – If I Only Had The Words (To Tell You) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I personally think it's about a man who loves a girl a lot, but doesn't know how to tell her and wonders if he even should, as he's afraid it would ruin whatever relationship they have. "If I only had the urge to tell you If you only know how hard it is to say When the simple lines have all been taken And the radio repeats them ev'ry day." The above lyrics seem to denote his frustration: he sort of wants to tell this girl, but he doesn't. Even if he did, he wouldn't know how. He can't find the right words because "the radio repeats them," meaning music can explain more than he could ever hope to. |

| Coldplay – A Spell a Rebel Yell Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I see this song as being about the American Civil War -- As far as I can see All time and circuitry is wrong -- This is probably from a Confederate girl's point of view. I can see her being around 15 or 16 years old. She's been at home for five years while a war has been raging on that's torn the country and thousands of families apart. She thinks its senseless because war doesn't decide who is right. It just determines who is left. -- As far as poetry Sit down and sing to me a song Cuz all I want in this world, All I want in this world Is for you to come home -- The girl misses the time before the war, a time of simplicity and happiness. She can hardly remember those days because she's grown up fearing that she will never see her father or brothers again. -- A spell, a rebel yell, a spell -- In this context, I think spell is referring to a period of time. There's a quiet period with no fighting in the area, then a battle, then a quiet period. (FYI, the Rebel Yell was the Confederate Battle Cry. It was used to intimidate the enemy and get the adrenaline pumping before rushing into battle) -- Soldier come home to me You've been away from me so long All I want in this world All I want and deserve Is for you to come home -- Those lines are pretty self-explanatory. This girl wants her father and brothers to come home safely. She's missed them all so much. She's dealt with all the hardships that they have: no food, no money, no safety, and the threat of being shot and killed on a daily basis. She just wants the madness to end so that they can be a family again. -- A spell, a rebel yell -- Again, this probably refers to a few months of peace, then a battle, then a little more peace, then a battle...basically the vicious cycle of war. |

| Coldplay – Reign of Love Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
This song is beautiful, yes, but the lyrics are far more sinister than the gentle music and muted vocals imply. I can sort of see a story unfold in the lyrics. --Reign of love, I can't let go To the sea I offer this heavy load-- This makes me think of a man who is hopelessly in love with the girl of his dreams, but she's getting married to his best friend. He's kept quiet about his feelings for so, so long, but now there's nothing he can do. He's depressed beyond all belief, so he goes to a secluded part of the beach. (Yes, in my story, the chapel is near a beach.) --Locust wind, lift me up I'm just a prisoner in a reign of love-- I had no idea what a "locus wind" was, so I googled it. The first site that came up was a Bible verse, Exodus 10:19 - "And the Lord changed the wind to a very strong west wind, which caught up the locusts and carried them into the Red Sea." So I believe this was during the time that Moses was trying to free the Hebrew people from Egypt and there were curses put on Egypt cuz the Pharaoh wasn't cooperating or something. So I interpret "locusts" as the man's problems, all the things he could've done weighing on his mind. As for "reign of love," "reign" could be a play-on of "rain." In a Rain of Love, you'd be happy because you have all the love you could ever hope for or want. In a Reign of Love, you'd feel controlled by love, an emotion that's supposed to bring happiness but is only ruling (and potentially destroying) your life. -- Locust wind, here I stop How I wish I'd spoken to a reign of love -- Again with the locust wind. So the guy is remembering all the things he could've or should've done, but didn't and because he didn't do them, he's miserable. He's done. He can go no further. "How I wish I'd spoken to a reign of love" probably infers the girl he's in love with. If only he told her sooner, he wouldn't be in this predicament. --Reign of love, by the church we're waiting Reign of love, on my knees, I'm praying -- I imagine that the wedding is soon to take place and our leading man is some sort of attendant at the wedding, like a groomsman or something. He's still at the beach, looking out to the ocean, but he's praying now. He feels as though there's no life left for him without his dream girl, his one true love. He can't just confess his feelings to her, especially on her wedding day! Because this problem seems unresolvable to him, our guy is just going to take himself out of the picture. -- How I wish I'd spoken up Away, get carried on a reign of love... -- The grand finale, our leading man walks into the ocean and drowns himself, being carried on a reign of love. |

| Coldplay – Death Will Never Conquer Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| This song makes me think of the American Civil War because of the southern gospel choir sound it has. I can sort of see a story within the lyrics, like the Confederate soldier knows that he may not return home alive(40% of Confederate soldiers died in battle. I've also read sources that say the percentages of were as high as 60%). Anyway, this guy knows the odds are against him, but it doesn't worry him. After all, the song title is "Death Will Never Conquer," implying a lot of resilience on the soldier's part. The way I see it, he knows he'll probably die, but that's not the end of life, you know? It's like the old saying "death isn't the end, it's just a new beginning." | |
| Coldplay – Lovers in Japan (Osaka Sun Mix) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| This song is my favorite off the Prospekt's March EP. It's actually quite different from the original "Lovers in Japan," though not a people notice the difference. Not only does the Osaka Sun Mix have more piano and drum backing as well as a vocal interlude between the two main verses, the song just sounds happier. If you listen to the original Lovers in Japan and listen to the Osaka Sun Mix immediately after, you can hear a difference. The Osaka Sun Mix is more energetic. The drum and bass line is more prominent, creating that "drive" that moves the song along. It has a very positive "we can do this!" feel to it. I imagine this song being about an army deserter who left the ranks because he was at war with himself. He didn't believe in the cause he was fighting for, so he left. He acknowledges that times are hard, but he knows that "one day, we're going to get out." One day, things will be good again. The Osaka Sun Mix reinforces this core belief with that happy, bouncy rhythm while the regular Lovers in Japan seems resigned in a way, like the downhearted people are preparing for a fight to make things good again. | |
| Coldplay – Life in Technicolor II Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I don't know what it is, but the Viva la Vida album, every song on it made me think of war and the things it does to people in some shape or form. That sound continued onto the Prospekt's March EP, though it's not a bad thing. I like this new, almost historical sound they have. Life in Technicolor ii sounds like a "hang in there" sort of song. Like lukebeaumont said, "it sounds like the end of the world is coming and it is inevitable, but love makes the time you have left worth living." I totally agree with that. However, it sort of speaks for the decades, if you know what I mean. There have been times in the world's history where people felt utterly helpless in a world that was spiraling out of their control, but they made it through. They survived. They held on for love, the love of their family, their friends, husbands, wives, children, relatives...they held on for the love of humanity, for the love of life with hope to lead them on. It's a rare thing nowadays that a band can capture such raw emotion that everyone on earth can relate to. Coldplay has done just that. |
