Neutral Milk Hotel – Holland, 1945 Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't think this is necessarily true. Also I may be being pedantic but he was born December 14, 1896 — October 24, 1954. She died 1945 and Magnum says "now". I don't know, I just don't like the idea that the little boy has to refer to another historical person

Bomb the Music Industry! – Side Projects Are Never Successful Lyrics 13 years ago
I think you are missing the point. This song is highlighting the sad irony of bands (and other people) that claim to be against corporate rock. It presents to us the inescapability of capitalism and corporatism - how we are bombarded with adverts and brands, how our entire lives revolve around work and money, how you couldn't really survive if you actually fought the system.

It's not anti-corporate rock at all. It's more anti-anti-corporate rock if anything because these people are being so blind. It's holding up a mirror to these bands that SELL music on smashing the system and the people agreeing who BUY this music as well the other drinks and foods they all get to set the ambiance while they tell how they are tearing down the state and how they are so independent from all those corporate suckers. It's the sheer ridiculousness of it all.

EMA – California Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this song. I don't think I've ever heard anything like it. It's definitely my favorite on the album so far, it's so haunting and gorgeous. I love the way she says "What's it like to be small-town and gay?" and "What does failure taste like? / To me it tastes like dirt / And I'm beggin you please to look away". I love the pain in her voice, usually voices stay more or less emotionless and it's the words and melody and the range in the voice that gives the song its emotion but I can hear the pain in just her voice, even ignoring words or melody or range. Just her voice. And I like it.

Just wanted to know what was up with the bit where they are laughing about black women or something? I can't find anything mentioning it anywhere. Really weird racist interlude. Anyway, mediocre and unoriginal song and album

Pixies – I'm Amazed Lyrics 14 years ago
A Kim Deal Interview about the beginning of the song:

"Ok! That was a story I was telling Charles as we were waiting for (producer) Steve Albini to get everything together. Meanwhile, Steve's rolling tape and we didn’t know it at the time, right? So I was telling Charles about Wayne High School, which is here in Ohio, and it's where I went to school. And I was telling him the story about how there was some sort of…sexual problem going on with a...certain teacher. And I shouldn’t name names but he was a biology teacher. And there were rumors. There were rumors. There were some rumors goin' around that he was um, having certain associations with some of the girls on the field hockey team. Like... he was having inappropriate contact with them."

--
Yes — but then on the original tape, you tell the story and then you say, "They were so...quiet about it. And the next thing you know ---" and boom — "I'm Amazed" starts. What was the "the next thing you know?!"

"[Laughs]. Oh! Well I think what I was probably about to say was that he was fired or something. But see, Albini pieced that all together and when we first heard it, it was just like, hilarious because we didn’t know he'd done it! Dude, we didn’t hear it until he played the whole record. We were sitting there and listening to all the songs in sequence! So you know, we're all sitting there. And you know, the first song comes on, and then the second, and all the rest and then the talking comes on and we were just, laughing so hard! We thought it was just great!"

Beach House – Turtle Island Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't think so, I think she uses the idea of pregnancy to represent the love growing inside her (our love/ Olive - a girls name) and like a child it will mean part of him is always with her, inside her and it will grow. Also, she is waiting, she is staying, at Turtle Island (a honeymoon resort, implying her staying at the point where love is presumably the strongest - she will love him always)

Why? – These Few Presidents Lyrics 15 years ago
Only saying this because I don't think anyone pointed it out yet

at the end of the song after he says the final "Yours is a funeral I'd fly to from anywhere" you can hear it echo in the background "Lie to her, lie to her, lie to her, lie to her"

Why? – Simeon's Dilemma Lyrics 15 years ago
No one has mentioned this yet but the lines

"Twenty-five carved with a butter knife
On the palm of my new hand, it's out"

echoing the beginning of the song, revealing what his birthday present to her in his hand was
(Today you're twenty-five, I made you something fine
It's in the palm of my new hand, it's out)
imply he has carved her age into his hand for her. I think the fact that he carves into his hand - a pretty permenant and serious action - something as obviously changing and momentary a thing as AGE I think shows his inability to let go of the past. He doesn't permenantly carve something like her name- something that would be more permenant, but something that will change in just a year... He wants to keep hold (literally haha) of something that will inevitably change and will definitely no longer be true soon, which is the same as the fact that although the relationship is over it's changed, he wants it forever. He clings onto the past.. OR EVEN he doesn't believe in the past - he almost doesn't really believe her age will change, not if he does carves it into his hand and makes it permanent, in the same way he doesn't believe the relationship has ended (or ever will) if he keeps it alive to himself, even if that means stalking her, etc. He also treats the gesture as a birthday present to her. Maybe he thinks him not letting go of the past, trying to hold on to this stuff is a dedication to her, that by stalking her and not letting go, he is doing it for her, as a kind gesture.

I guess it's up to the person reading which analysis is more relevant, I think it kinda works being a combination of all of them, that he just can't really face reality or change and he is putting her up there as a goddess (are you a young female messiah?) almost with a kind of shrine to her, and what he thinks are nice gestures... engraving her into himself to MAKE it real, to make it/her stay (despite the end that will and has already happened)

beautiful song!!

that's a joke right? people aren't ACTUALLY looking for meaning in something that presents its meaning in the sentence, are they? in any case, i think it means sucking dick for drink tickets at the free bar at my cousin's bat mitzvah

I love this song, it's so dreamy. And Turtle Island is a popular honeymooning resort in Fiji, make what you will of that
