To me this song is talking about loneliness. That try what you will to fill that hole, with sex or whatever, it can't be filled. I think what she means by the part about 'I am one of your people but the cars don't stop' is that even if meaningless sex is the 'in' thing to do,to get you into the 'in crowd'or whatever, you still end up all alone. I think it's about a whole generation of people coming together to try and feel something deeper, to fulfil their need to be loved, but they're going about it the wrong way. And this song seems to be questioning if there is even any right way at all. sort of saying that well, if there is no real way you might aswell keep on with the meaningless sex, because you'll end up alone in the end anyway. This is really a tragic song - quite dark. |

This could lead to her not knowing who to trust: Who is the lamb and who is the knife? |

I agree mostly with AlmightyGingerOne's interpretation, but I have something to add Midas is King and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight There is a story in the bible about King Midas, a man who gets to ask for anything he wants and so he asks to have the ability to turn everything he touches into gold - this seems to be a blessing at first, but one day when he goes to hold his daughter in his arms, she turns into solid gold. For the daughter, Midas would have been someone she trusted, but instead he seemed to turn on her, and change her into something more of value to him. Of course it was an accident, but the daughter wouldn't have known that. So the line could mean that someone close to her or someone that she trusted, has betrayed her because they've found someone/something better. This could relate to the music industry. |
