| The Mountain Goats – Proverbs 6:27 Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| This sounds like a song about depression. Sitting inside during interminable rain, unable to muster the effort to do anything but watch old movies and get pretty sentimental. This might be reaching a bit, but the last verse sounds almost like beginning to feel the depression slip away, and missing the privacy and intensity of those shadows. | |

The meaning of this song is pretty clear, but I have two things to add that might not be immediately obvious: 1. I think it's safe to say that the daughter is about 16 years old. It's even possible that the singer she is falling for is her own father... but that's only a guess. 2. Could the girl's name be "Honest"? It's an odd name but it seems to fit better that way. |

I can tell you what the very last of the lyrics mean--and that they're not transcribed correctly here. It's a Music Man reference. The words are: Well I say we got trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble, Three sides of every story With a capital T and that rhymes with P and that stands for Politicalamity |

| Electric Light Orchestra – Telephone Line Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Whoa. Dunno if this was the intent of ELO or not, but this song bears a few distinct similarities to the Twilight Zone episode "Night Call". | |

Dude... great catch. That's not a stretch at all--I thought the meaning of those lines was pretty clear on its own, but I had no idea it was also a Sondheim reference. :D The old love stories, West Side Story in particular, get by on the hope that "There's a time and a place for us", as does this one as well: "There's a place for us... it was just that the time was wrong." Awesome. Now I like this song even more. |

| David Byrne – She Only Sleeps Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I'm not so certain about this now, but my first impression on hearing this song was that it was a play on words--specifically, the title. As the song begins, it seems like he's saying "she only has sex with me", but as it progresses, the exact same phrase begins to mean the precise opposite--"with me, she only sleeps". Pretty clever. | |

| Does anyone else think this song is at least partially inspired by Slaughterhouse 5, or is it a coincidence? | |
