Ben Folds Five – The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind Lyrics 13 years ago
Not just history; seems she's fascinated in all areas of academia ("Plato", "DNA", "Frost", etc).

To me, Sara bears a striking resemblance to Claire from "Claire's Ninth". I personally relate to both of these songs, and I imagine that Claire and Sara are the same girl. After my parents divorced, I started tuning out things around me and focused on school and I couldn't be bothered with the bullshit.

Ben Folds – Practical Amanda Lyrics 14 years ago
This song was written for Nick Hornby's wife, Amanda Posey. "Practical" Amanda refers to the way that Amanda always keeps him in check, as he's "too busy dreaming." "Saved one life and made two others" refers to Nick's life being "saved" and their two children.

Ben Folds – Saskia Hamilton Lyrics 15 years ago
Just listen to the song and the lyrics and you can understand what it's about. I don't think it requires an explanation. If you watch the official music video, you can even see the definitions of some of the most interesting words in the lyrics. The meter of Saskia Hamilton is quite dynamic. It goes all over the map: 4/4, 2/4, 3/4, 5/4!

Ben Folds – Claire's Ninth Lyrics 15 years ago
foldsbaldwin and musicislife have it right. The way I see it is Claire's parents are trying to give her "the gift" of them being together on her birthday, but it has "gone wrong on her birthday".

I like the last verse: "Here's the check; they pay with two cards like they've never met. Goodbyes. Outside, it's cold in L.A."

I'm not sure, but I think this means that Claire is going to live with or visit the other parent in Los Angeles. "It's cold in L.A." is just saying she's going to have to adapt to a new environment.
