I was listening to this song and suddenly I felt like I understand the line "with the backup makeshift life in waiting". I think it's about a sort of "imaginary life" you make up when you don't like your own life or to escape the pain. The song is about a break-up. She's making up this "backup" life, dreaming about better days, she waits until the pain goes away because "time heals everything". She's waiting for a miracle to happen, a miracle that will turn things around. But she's asking if that's really the right thing to do, or if we should make a change if we want something to change. Don't just dream, make your dreams happen. |

When you look in the booklet that came with the album, you'll see that this is the only song on the album that didn't have any input by Adam, but was written only by some of the writers he worked with. So that makes me think this song is written about/for Adam. Adam said in an interview that the song is about not forgetting your roots. So I think the lyrics are what they want to tell Adam and maybe they were also showing him what they, as writers and producers, could bring to this album. That would also explain why this is the only song Adam didn't write on. |

It actually is 'slide the cotton off of your shoulder'. I have a hard copy of the deluxe edition of Ocean Eyes, and it has a lyrics booklet and this is what it says.
Also, it's 'well, I'll try' and not 'we'll all try'.
And I just love the Finding Nemo reference in this song :) |

It's 'race the wind' btw, not 'brace the wind' :)
But I agree with musicminded, I see the religious references in the song.
I know the song is about the movie Legend Of The Guardians, but I also saw some religious references in that movie :) |
