Great song, who knows where the "birth" truly is, Link Raye has produced some incredibly heavy blues based songs, listen to the lost album "They're outta here says archie" I believe its older than kinks etc, the album was banned. The "metal" mentality to my knowledge is Black Sabbath, but you could argue convincingly that they were just another great rock and roll band of the time like Zep and that they turned into a metal band later. To me metal is Motorhead and Metallica and stuff like that, It is easily distinguished as what it is. Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Kinks, early Black Sabbath etc are not metal, these are all ROCK AND ROLL/BLUES based bands. The Yardbirds are just way to bluesy to be considred metal at all. Maybe "Stroll On" is the closest thing you will get to metal from them, Heavy Rave Up Blues. Awesomeness. |

The intro is almost ripped directly from an old 1973 song called "Sport" by Lightnin' Rod, I think Eazy-E actually sampled the beat from the song as well, It's one of those mad old funk/soul/booogie songs that is the whole backbone of the rap genre. You can find it on VA ultimate breaks and beats vol 19. It was a full moon in the middle of june in the summer of 59 I was young and cool and shot a bad game of pool and hustled all the chumps I could find Well now they call me sport cause' I push the bar short and loved all the women to death I partied hard, packed a mean rod and could knock you out with a right or left I learned to shoot pool playing hooky from school at the tender age of 9 and by the time I was 11 I could pad roll 7 and down your whole quarter wine etc... Anthony sings it the same but with slightly altered lyrics, the original is pretty rough. |

To me it's just a song about a person who had a bit of a rough upbringing, went to a hard school, got bullied and persecuted for whatever reason but is now in their prime, is wiser for what happened and is having a great time. A gas in fact. I believe it is sung with that kind of passion anyway. You could relate this to Jesus but really most people on Earth would know someone or be someone that fits the description I gave above. You could relate it to how drugs make you feel better etc, but you probably just listened to it with a needle in your arm. It's somebody telling the world that no matter what you throw at them, they will take it in their stride and never let it get them down, that they are an unstoppable force of nature that will tear down anything in their path. After reading other comments, I would have to also agree that it was most likely named after a gardener. It's a great song that I don't think is supposed to be too metaphorical, but thats whats great about music, you can make of it what you want. |
