Tom Petty – Spike Lyrics 12 years ago
There's a youtube video somewhere with TP & HB playing this live pretty recently and he explains the inspiration behind it while the band vamps. It was at some real rough-n-tumble biker bar in Gainesville that TP finally got the nerve to go in one day, so he followed this guy in, who turned out to be a new guy as well. Petty lays low while the regulars at the bar start giving this new guy a bunch of shit for his spike collar and the type of guy they figure he is. The lyric is that mocking bar-talk, judging him and acting like they've got him all figured out.

Great song, and runs with the sort-of rebel/misfit theme of the album.

Tom Petty – Southern Accents Lyrics 12 years ago
I think it's just about this narrator who's from the south and has it deep in his blood, but who doesn't stay there forever. I think he's a bit frustrated that the world has changed him and he's nostalgic for the south, but he knows there's a part of that upbringing that'll never fade, and ultimately, leaving was the right thing. Hence the "I got my own way of _____, but everything ... where I come from" theme. It's one of my favorites from TP & HB.

Tom Petty – To Find A Friend Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't think it's so much about the divorce, I think it's just kinda about this wife who can't find anyone. Her husband runs off to make a whole new life, then her new boyfriend ultimately doesn't fit the part. The days are passing by and she can't seem to find a friend.
