| Amanda Palmer – Have to Drive Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I definitely agree with the alcoholism/depression take on this song. Often when depressed, the mornings of having everything flood back are the worst, and the only way to survive is to keep on running down the road, whether by foot or by car until you can feel you can outrun all the bad parts of life. It almost feels like a compulsion, to just drive away and forget it all, yet want to save the world around you from it too. to interpret the verse of the delicate position, I believe it's the "tight rope" walk you seem to be on when you're in the depression. Everything feels like it's spinning as when you do eenie meenie mini mo (a childhood game) or spin the bottle and you often cling to the first person or event you land on to find some balance. In the mess, you end up breaking the people you love to protect them, as often happens in any relationship involving depression. Yet in the long run, tying another down only builds resentment and pain, and the depression just keeps going in this perpetual cycle. Hope that helps with your interpretation |
