When I first listened to it I got the feeling of life as both sad and happy, and it sounded like growing up. It feels warm and happy but it's continually filled with sadness, and if you carry that meaning throughout the song it's really powerful. Many of the lyrics sound like they could be talking about an unfairness a child experiences, father of three, won't you believe the middle child's words? As the song progresses, the things that the child sees as unfair become more mature. Being forced to believe in what your parents do, simply because you weren't exposed to anything else. Or the house that is no longer home, having to grow up and leave behind what you once viewed as everything. No longer being attached to the only constant in your life. Then either the perspective shifts to the father or the child grows more and is now a father himself, and questions where his son his, who presumably has undergone the same things he did, and left as he did. A cycle that never learns from itself. So, I think it's less about running away and more about leaving home as we all do at some point, the father just misses when exactly his son left because for a while the son was physically there but not a part of it anymore. |
