I actually wrote a paper in my college psychology class over this song, how the influences of an 'authority' figure affect the events in a child's life and that child's personality and characteristics in life. Mordred has basically brought this guilelss son up to be her revenge against those who have wronged her.

Great song, I cry everytime I hear it... The song is a tale of lovers who were about to run off together, after the highwayman did one last robbery. But the soldiers came to the inn where his lover lived and took her captive so they could kill him. She died to save his life, but in the end his rage over her death was his end. But the ending is amazing, for in death they are together again.

At the start of the song, the girl is a hooker, and gets paid for sex by this guy, but he ends up beating and killing her. A month later he's probably on the run, sitting in a bar trying to drown the feeling of guilt inside. He thinks about his family and the little girl he has at home, and that it could have easily been her. He can't live with himself and the guilt he feels. He gets a gun and is still thinking, remembering his father and how he probably swore to himself when he was a boy he'd never be him, when in fact the man had become his father. In the end, he decides to do the right thing, throws the gun and whiskey away and claims he isn't his father's son, and that he's going to do the right thing. Father's son generally means 'like father, like son', that you are the product of your parents, therefore, you will be just like them. Saying you aren't your father's son is saying you won't do things like your parents did and you'll be your own person.

To me, this song is about a woman who has had her heart broken so many times it feels like it just can't be broken again. She promises herself 'never again', that she won't let anyone that close or into her heart. Then she meets some sweet talking man and she tries to keep him out, but finally she gives in and tries love again. She's so scared though that that hurt will return, and she tries to let him closer, just to be hurt again.

To me, this song isn't about harming yourself or anyone else. It's about being so depressed that you can feel nothing, you're just numb, and the bad things that cause you pain suddenly make you feel more alive and connected to the world then you have in a long time. The singer wants the pain, even if he can't have the love and light of the real world anymore, because he'd rather have the feelings pain has then the numb feelings he had before. Later in the song, he meets someone who feels the same way as he does, and final he feels something else, and asks them to trust him as he helps them feel again.
