Great analysis 'freak'. I saw Powderfinger perform last night and they played this song. Everything suddenly clicked into place for me with the meaning, and I came to almost identical conclusions! I figured 'Now he falls so far' refers to his reputation. One of Australia's most talented and respected musicians being forever remembered as the dude who accidentally hung himself during some kind of sex game, as rumours suggested at the time of his death. His reputation became about how he died, not his talent. |

After reading everybody's comments I know my interpretation differs from most, but I always saw this as quite an optimistic song about growing up and moving on. I'm a Brissie resident like the Powderfinger boys, and the sunsets over land here, so the reference to it setting over the beach makes me think of travelling or moving away. Maybe I should drop by maybe I should have called Maybe I should have followed you and beat down your door Maybe it's gonna be breaking you every time you fall But to shower you with pity will do you no good at all no good at all I always figures this part was about having to let go of people and allow them to make their own mistakes in order to grow stronger. |
