Shinedown – I Dare You Lyrics 13 years ago
This song has always reminded me of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde.

In the beginning with "let me introduce you to the characters in the show/one says 'yes', one says 'no'..." is very much like when Gray first arrives in London and meets Basil Hallward and Lord Henry (Henry and his darker intentions being the 'yes' and Basil being the 'no').

"Even in madness I know you still believe": Basil's hope for Dorian's "good" self to return (which pops up often in the book)

"Paint me on canvas so I become what you could never be": Pretty self-explanatory. Basil paints the "picture" of Dorian, which later is the source of his eternal youth, causing him to become forever young and beautiful-- what Basil could never be.

"I dare you to tell me to walk through fire/Wear my soul and call me a liar": Aside from the fire reference heavy at the end of "Dorian Gray", the painting was Dorian's "soul" throughout the novel (changing and aging based on time and how dark his soul was becoming). This part could be Gray threatening others that he would wear his "soul" (the soul that is his painting-- the soul he never shows).

"...some stay young, some grow old": Another reference perhaps to Gray's eternal youth and how he forever remains young while others age.

Overall, from the first time I heard this, I definitely thought of Wilde's novel. Definitely some heavy references.

Nightwish – Eva Lyrics 15 years ago
Every time I hear this song, I think of the WWII novel, "Requiem". It's about a little girl (named Eva) and how she tries to survive during the Holocaust. Eventually, she befriends a soldier of the SS whom protects her for as long as he can, while she teaches him that she believes there is good in everyone. Just the line "the good in her will be my sunflower field" alone reminds me of the soldier's thoughts after Eva passes on. (Sunflowers were also very sought after by the Germans in WWII, the oils to keep their guns working, etc.)

A beautiful song. A great book. They just remind me so much of each other... I wonder if the song had anything to do with the book.
