Meshuggah – Sum Lyrics 14 years ago
I think its a clever way to tie all the contradictions together. Everything is held together by contradiction, without it everything would cease to be. There needs to be contradiction, even on a materialistic level and not just in a philosophical, psychological way. I mean in actuality. Its the sum of things, the reason why all this exists. the reason why we act, and react. how matter behaves. Contradiction/confliction/opposition. Its what binds us and defines us. and it just keeps going and going, eternally recurring, and there is nothing we can do about it. You can contradict my statement, but it would only prove my point even further :D

Meshuggah – Straws Pulled at Random Lyrics 14 years ago
Fate is based on superstitions or the idea cause and effect. Both are ONLY human abstractions about how the world and the cosmos works. You can't tell whether we are governed by fate, or whether we are just here and for no purpose. Both ideas are frightening. but at the same time, theres no telling what the truth is. I think this song is just a troubled question over the idea of fate/determinism and free will.

I think really what its trying to say - after reading my previous comment - is that the person has stumbled upon the realization that reality is in the mind. Life is an "organic dream". Very solipsistic. Or at least, in all the person's musings and introspection they have suddenly realized reality is all in the mind. But the whole thing was like a secret.

But seeing as the song comes after In Death Is Death, i think it could be that now that the person has died, they have awoke from the "dream" that is life.

Meshuggah – Sublevels Lyrics 15 years ago
It, to me, is about someone going to sleep, dreaming. The voice is a very monotonous, droning and tiresome tone. Then in the middle of the dream it becomes lucid and they become aware that they are dreaming (lucid dreams). They want out of the dream, theyre panicing and frantic. Then as he wakes he goes into a state of sleep paralysis (if youve ever had it, its probably the most frightening experience in your life hahaha) begging to wake up. finally he wakes up, but the music at the very end gives me a thought of he's woke up into another reality, or he has seen reality as it truely is, because its very disturbing music.

Ya' see, it might actually not be as literal as a person dreaming. it could be a metaphor based on the idea that we could all be dreaming, or life is a dream. like someone who has been asleep all their life (metaphorically) and has woke up to see reality as it is.

Or someone waking up out of the moral and existential dilemma that society has gotten itself into (mechanical state, way of living, and the cyclical lifestyle, man loosing himself, no time for introspection and find himself again etc.)

It could be about the idea of believing in a God is almost as insane as believing in an imaginary friend.

i stare down the abyss of organic dreams: Theres a well known quote from a philosopher named Fredrich Neitzsche like this, "Be careful when fighting with monsters, lest you become one. And when you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares also into you". Basically when you think about existence and look for an answer you wont get one, it just stares back at you. You create a mirror in your mind that becomes part of you, and it can leave you feeling lonely. A spiritual abandonment. Introspection can be good, but it can leave you feeling lonely. this ties in with the solipsistic concept of the "organic dreams"; the idea that reality is all in the mind. its organic, not contrived.

Lamb of God – Descending Lyrics 15 years ago
i dont know why, but i always imagine someone dressed as jesus christ and the disciples headbanging to this song lmao. Dont mean to mock anybody in their faith in jesus etc. though. it just seems like a funny thing.

Lamb of God is definitely a brilliant sarcastic name for this band lol.

its probably "youre never alone" in that you're not the only one to have thought that life is basically just meaningless.

but apparently not lol

it seems to be about religion and how the religious ceremony seems to contradict itself. Putting the blame on a "segregated one" and practicing forgiveness is contrary.

Meshuggah – Pineal Gland Optics Lyrics 15 years ago
pineal gland....optics. Pineal gland is basically the connection between the mind and brain. its where we perceive the world. Optics, eyes. thats all i can sorta put to it. might be that pineal gland can be deceiving, that reality isnt the way we think it is.

exactly. were losing ourselves, colluding in our doom, fixed in a hypnoidal twilight state. The music and tone of meshuggah is very mechanical, so it only goes that its about humans becoming helpless, oblivious and mechanically indifferent to life.

Meshuggah – Vanished Lyrics 15 years ago
think this song might be about people just loosing their own sense of self. no time to reflect and introspect. The way human society is going in is a case of mechanically cold indifference towards one another and themselves, until nothing is left of themselves. no individuality, we're vanishing and we dont care to do anything about it because were caged into a 9-5 existence until we actually DO vanish. And then into the scrapheap to make way for another duplicate (human).

i think it may be to do with man finally realizing it's true ugly, gruesome face. we know now what we are, and are content with it, being that album is about man's zen with his obscenities.

Meshuggah – Shed Lyrics 15 years ago
wel, being that the whole album is based on paradoxes and catch 22 logic, the interpretation I get from it is:

I float through physical thoughts: My thoughts manifest my reality. But what I think its saying is that he is a thought....its hard to explain.

I stare down the abyss of organic dreams: Reality is a dream that naturally happened out of nothing (Organic) and I can see straight through it, but its secret. I cant help it from happening, because it just IS.

All bets off, I plunge only to find that self is shed: Like a lucid dream someone becomes aware that they are dreaming and they want out of it (only in this case, "reality" is the dream). Self is shed could be that the body and external is nothing but a coil and meaningless. The origin of reality is the mind. The mind is the centre-fold creation.

He can't escape because he can't think of being non-existant (ITS LOGICALLY IMPOSSIBLE). so he is damned, so to speak. He cant help but exist, he cant help, therefore, everything else existing. Because his very attempts to get free (i.e. relinquinsh thoughts and destroy the illusion) means he is thinking. thus, there is no way around it, "catch 22 logic". thus, reality has and always will be here, but it is nothing but a thought. this solitary soul, forever.

The tone of voice could be seen as a person that has existed forever and knows its all not real, or at least he is the creator and is basically fed up with it and wants out. OR could be seen as someone whispering a secret to you!! :D

look up "solipsism" on google etc.

think it may be to do with humans just being content in their filth. "flourishing in our disgrace, blessed be the human way". Like Obzen. Obscene and Zen, man is at peace with its obscenity.

Meshuggah – Rational Gaze Lyrics 15 years ago
yes, the song takes a stab at the "common sense" realism that the ignorant believe in. But we're just as blind as the ignorant are. The common sense realist takes existence and existents for granted. The song is about the idea that we cannot trust our senses, or our senses do not give us a clear picture of reality. John Locke, George Berkeley and David Hume were the three main philosophers that challenged the external world. Others noteable are Parmenides, some of the other pre-socratics also and Immanuel Kant. Its of metaphysical and epistemological issues.

The fact that our senses deceive us, the only thing we have left to go by is reason i.e. 2 + 2 = 4 and will always be that way. But one day 2 + 2 may = 5. And everything is not fitted into neat little numbers (Pi and square root of 2 are examples). Reality becomes a habit for people, thus taking it for granted. For our senses an orange may taste sweet one day and bitter the next. A brown coat may look black in a dark closet. Railway tracks seem to converge as they get farther out (and the last time i checked parallel lines DO NOT meet haha). when you look into the mirror and stare for a while, you begin to seem different. which leaves us with the question of whether we know anything of the external world at all.

p.s. This song should have been the soundtrack to the matrix!!
