| Arctic Monkeys – Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I love the sarcasm in Alex's voice when he sings this... It's a very sarcastic song, I mean he's saying all of these things that are really dangerous and then says don't sit down cause I've moved your chair, which isn't as high-risk as the others... I agree that it could be about the music industry though, if you take a risk then you get shafted for it, basically. It's an incredible song though, loving the new style! |

| The Gaslight Anthem – The Navesink Banks Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| The line "barely 17" could be a reference to "we were barely 17 and we were barely dressed" from Meatloaf's Paradise by the Dashboard Light, which is also about losing your virginity... And The Gaslight Anthem quote this song in Senor and the Queen, with the line "glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife", so maybe this song is reflective of Meatloaf? | |
| Arcade Fire – Keep the Car Running Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| When I first heard this song I actually thought it was a cover of a Bruce Springsteen song... I'm not sure what it is about it, but it sounds heavily influenced by him. | |
| The Gaslight Anthem – The Backseat Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| "In the backseats of burned-out cars" is similar to the line "there's far too many diamonds in the backseats of borrowed cars" in their earlier song "Wooderson", just a little interesting thing I noticed... | |
| Marina and the Diamonds – Mowgli's Road Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I love the cutlery references throughout this song... But I agree that it's "We are the spoons they're telling me", it makes the most sense. Marina and the Diamonds make such great music, it's poppy and catchy but there is always a real meaning behind it, even if this song does sound like nonsense... |

| Belle & Sebastian – Le Pastie de la Bourgeoisie Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I think the word "pastie" does refer to the slang meaning of someone who doesn't really fit in or is a bit of a wet blanket, because of the line: "you're a junior life saver But your friends are all serious ravers" This fits with her being the left out one of the new middle class wild kids? Even more so when it talks about her not being able to get a boyfriend... I absolutely love the line: "Wouldn't you like to get away? Give yourself up to the allure of Catcher in the Rye" Only Belle & Sebastian could write lyrics with so many beautiful literary allusions... I just love them :) |

| Belle & Sebastian – The Blues Are Still Blue Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I love this song, it just makes me want to dance! But how much does it sound like Marc Bolan/T-Rex? | |
| Mystery Jets – Flash A Hungry Smile Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I'm pretty sure it goes: When you walk into the room Girls frown boys swoon But all you've got to do is do it To know there's really nothing to it And I know this may sound strange, but I think he's trying to get a girl to sleep with him? He thinks she's gorgeous but she's too scared because he's really keen? |

| The Gaslight Anthem – 1930 Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I think it's definitely about his grandmother dying of Alzheimer's, which makes it a beautifully tragic song. The line "and you said you were satisfied/and this body's just waiting to die" makes me think so. Also, the significance of 1930 may be Brian picturing when she was young and beautiful instead of the condition she's in now, as though he's trying to form good memories of her? This is one of the most incredible lines in any song: Before it took you from me. You said "I love you more than the stars in the sky, But your name just escapes me tonight" It gives me shivers. |

| Dirty Pretty Things – Truth Begins Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
It sounds to me like it's about Pete Doherty... I know that's cliched but it makes sense. It seems to be about Carl wanting to make up with a friend after a fight or something, he starts off with describing their friendship, how much they rely on each other, then hints that something has gone wrong. As the chorusy bit comes in, the music cheers up and he starts saying that they need to put it all behind them and that everything will be ok? "What you wants to get a bike and do wheelies I bet you can't do 'em half as good as me Throw it out When it's over it's over" The tone here is light hearted, showing that he wants things to go back to the way they were, friendly. Of course, this could be about any friend, but I would guess Pete because of the "beg steal or borrow" reference and also because Carl and Pete did have a massive fall-out? Anyway, it's an amazing song, the line "the sun will shine again tomorrow" always cheers me up because it's true, no matter how bad things are, there will always be something to look forward to :) |

| Paramore – Misery Business Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I did almost exactly what this song is about, and god did it feel so good... I saw Paramore live recently and they were incredible, I lost my voice after screaming this song... It's just incredible, when I first heard it I just loved the bitchy nature of it, my favourite line is: "I watched his wildest dreams come true, not one of them involving you". Harsh. |

| The Libertines – Tomblands Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
This song reminds me of where I grew up, not because it was like the Tomblands, but it had a reputation as being rough... And I always thought the lyrics went: "Yo ho ho another mini-mart Taliban" meaning some kind of organisation/gang centred around a corner shop or something... Now it makes much more sense... |

| The Courteeners – Acrylic Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
It's a satirical look at modern bands who sound just like copies of The Libertines, which has become increasingly common recently. The metaphor "you got an ok jacket but you've got no spine" is related to books, but also implies that they look good on the outside and their songs sound fine, but they have no substance because they're just clones. I don't think it's about themselves though, because the song itself is quite Libertines-esque unlike most of their others, I think this was just irony that they didn't convey clearly enough... |
