| Fiona Apple – Window Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| The song is about a relationship gone bad resulting in bitterness. The window is a metaphor for trust and honesty while opening your heart and soul to someone. The glass represents truth and revealment of one's self in the act of love. The "filthy pane of glass" means cover-up, lies, and bullshit. "He went on and on" with his bullshit and lies. The "outside world" was the truth being covered up. "So I had to break the window" was to call him (the boyfriend) out, cutting through all the lies and get the truth. If she didn't do that she would take out her anger on herself, the boyfriend, or the other woman in other destructive ways. The remarks of never focused, good as asleep, takes a lot of it away, are all about being confused and complacent for a long time. Now she woke up and realizes what has been going on in front of her by smashing the bullshit and lies represented by the dirty window with anger. She see's clearly now what is going on. After doing that she is now very jaded, untrusting, and unsure of her feelings. "I can't tell what I'm looking through" means she only sees the glass and not what's beyond it, meaning she trusts no one or anything. She is now fixated on only the glass (truth) and not what is beyond it (life). She breaks a clean window (truth) because even when presented with the truth, she now distrusts it and everyone, and sees everyone as a liar. She's calling everyone out! | |

I just love the song regardless of its meaning. Now for my spin on the song: I watched you change into a fly The girl he once knew has matured into someone unrecognizable to him; he doesn't like it I looked away, you were on fire She is proud and assertive of the new her, and feels on top of the world I watched a change in you, it's like you never had wings He will not accept nor allow the change in her, and wants her as she was And you feel so alive, I've watched you change He scorns the new her and her attitude I took you home, set you on the glass He tells her he can see through her, and that she is still just a maggot I pulled off your wings, then I laughed He physically and emotionally reduces her to nothing by mocking her of her delusional beliefs I watched a change in you, it's like you never had words She is too wounded to speak and has nothing to say; he's now happy believing she is as she was Now you feel so alive, I watched you change; It's like you never had... He puts her fire out, and watches her change back to before she had wings, lying to himself that she is happier now when she is crushed I look at the cross, and I look away His conscience makes him realize too late he was wrong in what he did Give you the gun, blow me away He tries to show penitence by surrendering to her and not fighting any retribution I watched a change in you, it's like you never had words Now recovered by her ordeal, she chooses not to say a thing Now you feel so alive, I've watched you change; It's like you never had... She feels alive now because she confidently moves on with her life, "like you never had... me" |

I agree; so much intense emotion! This has been a favorite of mine since it first came out (yes I'm that old). I always thought of it as about being in real love for the first time after never being able to trust and open his heart to it. Now finally in love for the first time, he's is terrified about being so vulnerable and pleads "Don't let me down". So what happens? She does him in - good! Even if I'm wrong, this is always what the song always meant to me - a very sad story. |

| I like your spin on the lyrics, and it makes perfect sense to me. So perfect - Axl is such an ass anyway. | |
| Massive Attack – Paradise Circus Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| My interpretation is not from a man or a woman, but rather a story about false love, and the man or the woman could be on either side of the story. I will start with the line “Love is like a sin, my love, for the ones that feel it the most” He is giving all of his love to her while she is unable to give equal love in return, causing a sin by living a lie, and your “love” becomes only lust for something you cannot have. “Look at her with her eyes like a flame” means she is filled only with her own desires, and cares little for him. “She will love you like a fly will never love you again” This clearly shows that like a fly that craves a meal and then moves on, she too will move on after her desires are satisfied. ”It's unfortunate that when we feel a stone” Whether it’s a stone we lay on while we are sleeping or a millstone around the neck, I see the meaning the same. One is unhappy about something he/she is fully aware of, and in this case — no love. When this is added to, “We can roll ourselves over 'cause we're uncomfortable” means both of them have become numb and accepting of a loveless life. Lastly, “Oh well, the devil makes us sin, but we like it when we're spinning in his grin (grip). I see this as apathy, hopelessness, and acknowledgement that love will never be found, and this surrender to unhappiness (the devil) is the sin. The spinning in his grin (or grip) means how much one can wallow in one’s sorrow and enjoy the pain of being unloved because this pain is the only realization of being alive. The man and the woman in this story are both very pitiful, because the very strong preyed on the very weak, and neither have any true understanding of love. | |
