Mumford & Sons – Awake My Soul Lyrics 13 years ago
Without knowing the writers meaning and intent explicitly my best guess for what the writer meant by this song has to do with spiritual warfare and conversion.

"How fickle my heart and how woozy my eyes", recognizes everyones basic human weakness as we hunger for the fulfillment of our desires we are tempted to sin and we commit them, at times, almost blindly. One day we're on trying to be "good people" and then another day we may find ourselves lusting, lying, cheating, angry, hateful, vengeful, cold, etc etc. Ever hungry for another desire to be filled our eyes always ready to feast on the next thing that may fill us we turn in every direction at once looking, searching, to be complete, whole, fulfilled.

"I struggle to find any truth in your lies" We see hear that the narrator seems to be talking to the devil (The Father of Lies) who tempts us with half truths that seem like they'll satisfy us. They may momentarily suffice but after the deed is done emptiness sets in and thus the lies are seen for what they are, empty promises with know truth of fulfillment of any desire.

"And now my heart stumbles on things I dont know, this weakness I feel I must finally show" - When we come up empty after falling for lies and temptations we are tempted to hide our weaknesses, our imperfections. To be free and cleansed of our weaknesses we must first admit them and bring them to the light if we ever hope to change for the better. Why hide our weaknesses if we can just get rid of them? Getting rid of them means we have to admit them in the first place.

"Lend me your hand and we'll conquer them all, But lend me your heart and I'll just let you fall" --The devil speaks. After we decide to make a change for the better, away from the lies, the devil comes up with a better offer. He'll say: "Why admit your weaknesses and try to change? Who says they are weaknesses after all? Just keep on doing what I tell you and you'll surely win, come out on top, be the best, be honored, adored, glorified." He doesn't want our heart because deep down in our heart of hearts is true goodness. He doesn't want to fulfill the longings of our heart he just wants our hands and bodies, to do his work for his bad intentions (i.e. to cause pain, suffering, murder, death, genocide, hate, prejudice etc. etc.)

"Lend me your eyes I can change what you see, But your soul you must keep totally free, Har...." The devil continues. He wants to pull a cover over our eyes. He promises to "change what you see". He wants to change your perception so you believe that his lies are going to lead you to happiness. He wants to to change your perception so when you're really empty inside you can justify your emptiness and not see your enslaved to whatever created material thing or activity hass consumed your life (money, material, parties, sex, fame, drugs etc. etc.). He wants you to believe that this all there is and nothing more but at least you have more than, somebody else. Your soul we'll still seem like yours after all you will still have the choice, but you'll be so enslaved that you wont be free at all. It will be the mere appearance of freedom. To be able to choose to do whatever you want but your actually enslaved by your desires and errant attempts to fulfill them. "Har Har....." The devil laughs when we fall for the lie.

"In these bodies we will live, in these bodies we will die, And where you invest your love, you invest your life." Truth offered up. If we spend our lives "loving" the lies of the devil and the temptations he offers and seek comfort and happiness in temporary satisfactions that leave us empty in the end, THEN when we die thats what we'll have to look forward to, more emptiness supplied by the devil at our death. A pit, a void an empty heart that was never full. It only seemed full chasing after the lies.

"AWAKE MY SOUL..." The cry. The cry of the person of the song to be free'd from the lies. To be open and awakened to a new life, a new perception, a new meaning, a true happiness, a true fullness of heart, true beauty, true goodness, true peace, Truth. A cry to God, the true Creator of happiness, peace, love and truth that the devil tries to distort with his lies everyday. AWAKE MY SOUL. Awake. "For you were made to meet your Maker". Your Maker, your Creator, God. The one and only Truth to a fulfilling eternal happiness.

Broken Bells – The High Road Lyrics 15 years ago
Its about our deepest motivations. Its about our decisions. Its about how the choices we make effect our life not to mention other lives. Its about how motivations for power, property, prestige, and pleasure leave you empty only wanting more. And a solution to all the chaos we create might be to curl your lips on the barrel, not a wise choice. All things created of this world leave you empty b/c we all die and you can't take any of it with you. Its the search for something more than material, emotional, intellectual, but for something eternal, heavenly, infinite, transcendent which is impossible for humans to create but can only be a gift from God. It's about how we as human beings are finite and with a seemingly infinite desire for something more. How do we fulfill our infinite desires, find the "High Road"? By seeking God who is infinite and eternal.
