| XTC – Making Plans For Nigel Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| The "Nigel" in this song is named for Nigel Gwenap. At the time of writing, he just was a teenager with musical aspirations. Now in his 50s he, along his band Black Cat, is a time served veteran of the Swindon underground music scene. | |
| The Smiths – I Started Something I Couldn't Finish Lyrics | 12 years ago |

The clue is in the title "started something I couldn't finish". It's about leading someone on, whether intentionally to be cruel or just being "all mouth and no trousers" I'm not sure. The unpleasant "three word gesture" implies the former but embarrassment can make people defensive so that could explain it too. "Gilded beams" I love. Clearly some sexual innuendo, I think exactly what only Moz could tell us, some private joke likely enough! As for the gay/straight thing, most of Moz's sexual references are ambiguous. He could be gay, straight or bi. I genuinely believe he just enjoyed making us guess. And the fact that we're still hypothesising over it today just show's how well he did it. I personally hope we never find out for certain one way or the other. I love the noises in this one "urrrggghh", and the way his voice breaks slightly when he sings the line "what tradition means". I think it's such a cheeky, tongue in cheek little number! |

| The Smiths – Barbarism Begins at Home Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
No real mystery here, it's obviously anti abusive/violent parenting. Morrissey way ahead of the times here. Even nowadays (2013), hitting children is seen as an acceptable form of discipline in countrys all over the world, UK & US to name just two. Back in the '80s it would have been the norm in most homes. Hitting a child is never the right thing to do. It is the adult's fault for losing control, never the child's for provoking it. And to do it in a planned, premeditated fashion is just sick. It needs to stop now. Thank you Moz for your part in highlighting this issue to the population. If this song saved just one child from physical or mental scarring as a result of violence in the home then it was a job wonderfully done. |

| Gomez – Get Miles Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I think it's about escapism generally, not specifically through drug use. The first verse I take literally. There's nothing like going and sitting on a cliff and staring out to sea when life gets all a bit too much! The second verse I take literally too - getting away from the hustle and bustle. Although for some, going to the big city is a means of escapism, presumably not so for the songwriter. The third verse is probably metaphorical for drug use. Personally I alwys thought the lyrics were "...in all this grass man i don't get no wheat." Excellent song either way. Saw them live about 12 years ago. Gives me goosebumps thinking about that gig even now. | |
| Ride – Castle on the Hill Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| This one's about the band themselves. More specifically, it was written by Bell about Gardener who walked out on the recording sessions and ultimately the band split up before the album's release. | |
| Kasabian – Cutt Off Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I'm pretty sure the first verse is about John C Lilly as others have said. Verses 2 & 3 are definitely references to espionage and/or terrorism. By the way, it is definitely "almonds" and I think this is a reference to Semtex (C4) as opposed to Cyanide. | |
