This is my favorite interpretation. I know White isn't above a love song, but I don't think this has anything to do with male/female relations. The oil theory makes a lot of sense. It's a big issue right now. I also think it's poking at capitalism a little: I never said we was equal I never wished to be saved If I�m a problem then preacher Let�s dig a little grave This could easily be someone who is doing well in business (the oil business) and who feels like they've sold their soul or something, but it feels worth it because they're on top. |

I love how wide open to interpretation this song is. For me its about a man who made the speaker fall in love with him, but then he betrayed her and left her. Now, she can't help but have a mixture of love and hate for him: "You better shut your mouth And hold your breath And kiss me now And catch your death" It's just beautiful! And the music is so amazing too! |
