The Velvet Underground – Who Loves The Sun Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't think this song is any way a rebuke of the Beatles' 'Here Comes The Sun' but the songs are funny contrasts as while both have uplifting melodies — the sun in Harrison’s song represents hope after a literal or metaphorical ‘long cold lonely winter’ while Reed’s sun represents just another essential element (it makes plants grow!) that doesn’t matter when you’re suffering from a broken heart. I like both songs but Reed’s sun song warms my cold heart more. It’s an interesting bookend with I’ll Be Your Mirror from the 1st album as that song has the love-seeking narrator quote “I’ll be the wind, the rain, and the sun” and Who Loves The Sun‘s love-lost narrator doesn’t care about any of the three. The Velvet Underground – Satellite Of Love Lyrics 15 years ago
I definitely like the rocking VU version better than the glam ballad on his David Bowie-produced Transformer album (fitting given Bowie’s outer space fixations). I’ve read some interesting interpretations of the song and Lou Reed describes it as the “worst kind of jealousy”. But I read this song - right or wrong - as "Watching TV can’t fill the void of love in absentia." (http://www.kitchensnark.com/2010/entertainment/rock-snob-sommelier-velvet-underground/). Now maybe that absent love is messing around with Winkin', Blinkin' or Nod...but TV is a sucky replacement no matter what the reason...
