This song is all about living the life of a famous rocker, loaded with money, free to do what he wants and careless of life and love. "Inside i was restless, Left awake to the clocks, Outside wailing helpless, Ridden out by the locks." This means the people outside of his riches are helpless people that don't know a careless life like he has. Being awake to the clocks could mean that he's afraid of getting old. "You said you want diamonds, Well i think you'll like pearls, and said you want cigarettes, well i think i want girls." She wants diamonds but he gives her pearls because that's what he likes. He doesn't care (that's what the atmosphere "tells" me). She also wants cigarettes. But he wants girls. Lots of them. He doesn't care that much about her. "Inside, outside, Inside your love."(repeated numerous times) This means she gets her in love with him (or back) repeatedly, but not for long. He found her out. What that means, I don't know. Probably the fact that she doesn't really love him but just for his money. And life goes on like that. Love this song. It's very melancholic and gives a sense of "doing the f*ck you want*. |

I think this means that he's in love again with an old lover. "I fell asleep last night On a roundabout" This means he calmed down and stopped where he had to make a choice. "A cloud of wings" Angel wings. Maybe his dream or cushion. "From the glass around you" Shattered glass from the past arguments. "Light reflects The sun on your skin" Now he's not in love any more he realises how beautiful she is. The shattered glass of the past reflects the light onto her. "When you touch me Bullets in conversation On a crowded train Quietly violent" When he touches her he's remembered by the past arguments. The "bullets" in conversations stand for harmful words. Or he regrets the past and he's reminded by her. He's not angry but sad, making him quiet but he feels torn up by it. "When you touch me Planets in sweet collision Quietly violent" When he's touched it feels like a two planets collide. It has a great impact on him. It feels very special. Hence the "sweet" collision. The feeling he has inside are very strong (violent-like), but not bad. So quiet. Either that, or like I stated above. "I fell asleep last night On the underground" Same thing. He fell asleep. But this time, in a very busy place, where people could see him. People can see he decided to love her. He is not ashamed to show it. "The air there breaks With the light around you The darkness breaks Whenever you walk in" The air breaks either means that the wind stops, time slows or that he suddenly stops breathing (by her). And the light around her causes darkness to break no matter where she goes. So she's a very beautiful / good person, taking peoples' breaths away. I love this song and it has beautiful lyrics. |
