I had been thinking/hoping that this had been a reference to Mary Timory given both their ties to DC...but I see it's not.
Definitely getting a James Joyce/The Dead vibe from the third verse, especially given the subject of the first two. |

This song, per Our Band Could Be Your Life by Michael Azzerad, is about MacKaye's pre-Fugazi/post-Minor Threat period when he tried to start a few bands, with nothing working out. DC bands had a reputation for breaking up very quickly, and many members formed new bands with the same people without resolving old tensions, repeating the cycle (i.e. MacKaye's own Embrace, which was the band the Faith with Ian replacing his brother as singer). "Waiting Room" shows his eagerness to start a new band with the right members, while afraid that he is getting too old. A powerful introduction about and to the band. |
