Mumford & Sons – Sigh No More Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm beginning to wonder, how much of these lyrics AREN'T quotes from Shakespeare ? ^^ I think it great that they draw from such an inspirational source. So many good songs have shallow lyrics, it's a shame. But I know how hard it is to write good stuff, so picking from grand help is a great start. And now these guys have managed to build there own meaningful poetry around thought-inducing quotes, with this truly beautiful result. That's what art should always be like : taking inspiration from your predecessors and making a new interpretation with your own touch ...

Kasabian – Club Foot Lyrics 14 years ago
The way the verse is sung at the beginning reminds me of some songs on the band The Servant's first album ... And yeah, I guess it does sound a bit like Muse, but with the magic taken out of it ;). Cool song anyway !

OneRepublic – All The Right Moves Lyrics 15 years ago
Em, where do you think they're "going down" to ?
Or what do you think "We're going down" means ??
I sort of saw it as these people they're talking about being so very interesting, pretty, popular, graceful, etc., the band are going down to their place where there's so much going on...
But from what I read here, most people didn't understand it that way so I was wondering !
Thanks

Phoenix – Lisztomania Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's somewhat about the real historical Lisztomania, so at the time it was the true gentlemen that listened to his music, not the proletarians who didn't have any access to it. In the making-of video, one of the guys say it was that historical fact which inspired them to write the song. And so they filmed the video clip in Bayreuth, Germany, where Liszt lived for a while, and they show the monuments dedicated to him in the town and all.
But then I think some of the lyrics are also meant in a broader sense, reflecting on fame in general.

Cheryl Cole – Promise This Lyrics 15 years ago
Yes the French part came as a surprise to me (I'm French) because those are the lyric of a popular nursery rhyme about a Lark (alouette). Like most nursery rhymes it doesn't make much sense ! It goes :

Alouette, gentille alouette
= Lark, nice lark

Alouette, je te plumerai
= Lark, I will pluck you

Je te plumerai la tête
= I will pluck your head

Je te plumerai le bec
= I will pluck your beak (!?!)

I think it was used here firstly because it sounds quite good, the "ouette ouette" (I would write it with the "u" according to the french pronunciation, but it doesn't really mater).
And then it's also a metaphor about freedom and captivity of course.

One last thing, the way the french words are sung here is quite far from the true french pronunciation so it is really hard to understand, but you wrote

"déployer l'aile " which is singular, so it would mean spread ONE wing - a rather strange concept.
I would write it "déployer LES aileS" with the plural so it would make more sense to be speaking of both wings .
And to me it sounds the same in both "(plumerai) les ailes" and "(déployer) les ailes" said "lay alay" :)

The Killers – Human Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm probably biased here because I AM a dancer, and dancing puts me in the most wonderful state of mind, like I am free, and alive and able to embrace the whole world... A kind of trance really.

So when I hear the whole build-up to this chorus, especially the "cut the chord" -stop- and then the fall into the chorus, I feel it as a literal liberation from a restraining lead, letting go and abandoning oneself to the magical -vital- state of "dancer". Like every single human has this repressed nature inside, ready to emerge at any time, that would make everyone unite as soon as music is heard. I have that picture in my mind of a vast open space covered in whirling people just feeling in unison. It's pretty enthralling !!
I never really take any notice of verses in songs so I can't say what impression those made on me. I could read them and have a think, but I'm nit sure music should be a rational process, so I won't ! ^^ I probably should though...

Revolver – Get Around Town Lyrics 15 years ago
Well I was hoping to get a few clues about this song's meaning in what other people could have interpreted, but I see I'm the first one ! Pretty normal in a way, seeing as it is a French song not played abroad, and this is an English speaking website... But still if someone comes by, please express your opinion !
My first interpretation would be that the band are looking for a spokesperson, an agent, or a public face of some kind to do all the tedious formalities tied to fame : TV shows, interviews, paparazzi, fan frenzy ... Jail being only a metaphor for all that. But that's only deduced from the last verses, and I'm still not sure about the whole "police" and "war" thing. Maybe it's not showbiz but politics they're describing (with demonstrations and war), cause it's true they tend to merge nowadays.
But as for the "bodies' count down" I am totally clueless. Though I would have spelt it "it's the body's countdown, the body counts down" as a singular. it seemed to make more sense and it sounds the same anyway ! My hypothesis would be something to do with modern obsession for healthy figures, skinny or muscular on the one hand, and growing obesity rates on the other, and that our bodies are about to revolt.. In what way is a mystery.
I'd be happy to hear you take on these lyrics, please share !

Muse – Soldier's Poem Lyrics 15 years ago
The song's name is "Soldier's Poem" and not "A soldier's poem" ! Could that be corrected, for the sake of accuracy ? Thanks !

Placebo – Ashtray Heart Lyrics 15 years ago
I have not the faintest notion of Spanish, and, being mainly French speaking, I often misunderstand some lyrics... So my Mondegreen repertoire is pretty well furnished! This is how I thought the chorus went:

"Said he'd settle, he said he'd settle,
He caught us all, he said he'd settle"

I thought it went well with the whole commitment issue of "promise I could not make", though I couldn't quite figure why it'd switched to the 3rd person suddenly... ^^

R.E.M. – It's the End of the World as We Know It Lyrics 15 years ago
Yes, I think R.E.M are definitely a political band, they've often been teased about their commitment towards ecology especially. But it's true that for me, not being from the US, it's hard to understand all the references...

What I've always wondered, was what the meaning of the "as we know it" part is.

Does he mean it like, "the world is changing, and we know that it is changing",
or "the world we know, the world as it is today, is changing" ???

I used to think it was the first answer, and recently I realized there could be a different meaning !
Any idea ?
