wow i hadn't even thought of the Mayer/mayor connection in that line! thanks for adding to the discussion!! I agree with your honest critique of Taylor's music. that makes me wonder who her "tim McGraw" song was about and where he is these days... probably flippin' burgers, knowing where Taylor grew up! that made me sounds like a jackass; there's nothing wrong with supporting oneself and one's family by working in fast food if need be. anyway, I wonder what he's up to these days! Taylor needs to write a book in 20 years explaining who all of her songs were about and where they are now! |

thank you for pointing this out. I hadn't even looked at the lyrics above (just came for the discussion) but I thought that "long" was pretty obvious. that's also my second favorite line after the fireworks/sad empty town line. |

go with your first instinct ;) I don't think it's an accident john's style is so obvious in this song. it's a gorgeous song, but all the more heart wrenching when you know both the people involved.
as far as the alternate "dear John" letter theory... I think there's entirely too much emotion in her voice to be about something that did not personally affect her to a great extent. |

I'm too am glad y'all picked up on this!!! the guitar riff/draw organ is EXACTLY like mayer's style!! so clever of her to put these in here. I've taken many courses in UC Berkeley's music department, and I can honestly say she is a musical genius, unlike many artists out there. This song makes me cry when I listen to it... like her song "Love Story" when he finally proposes to her... Anyway, this song is amazing and gives me even more respect for her. And I'm a huge John Mayer fan, even with his occasionally chauvinistic lyrics ("you'll be a bitch because you can") but this song really expresses the heartbreak that he has caused so many women. I may have to boycott him after this song... |
