| The song means "That male of the species H. Sapiens Sapiens who I have just observed in this venue is dominant, well-endowed in both status and resources, and quite aesthetically pleasing. This has lead to a marked increase in cardiovascular activity due to sexual arousal." | |

I think Dylan is saying that power generally comes from being evil, and happiness generally comes from being good. He is urging the woman in question to choose goodness and happiness over power and wealth. By the way, Dylan got a lot of flack for the alleged sexism of the song. I don't think it's sexist, because I don't think the woman's relationships with men are meant to be the focal point. Rather, the choice she makes between power and happiness is the focal point. The theme is meant to be universal, not just to apply to women. In addition, the woman in the song is equally dependent on men, whatever she chooses. In her wealthy, powerful life, she is obviously still living off her father's providence, and she's also courting wealthy, powerful men who don't love her and will only use her "Just how much abuse will you be able to take ? Well, there's no way to tell by that first kiss" So really, the "sexist" element is that Dylan is urging the woman to seek out a mutual relationship with a man who loves her, rather than living off men who provide her with wealth and power, but no love; another universal, non-woman-specific message. The fact that feminists object to this says a lot more about feminism's views on men and the world than it does about Dylan's views on women. |

My interp: This song is ambiguous. There are hints that it is about a woman giving her loving, joyous submission to her love, despite her feminist ideals, and there are hints that it's about a woman deluding herself that she loves a man and would do anything for him, and not realizing what she's really giving up. Each person can decide their own interpretation. I certainly hope it's the first one. |
