The Mountain Goats – The Young Thousands Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm paraphrasing from memory, but John Darnielle has said that the album We Shall All Be Healed was made by 'dredging up a version of myself that i managed to kill a long time ago'.

The Mountain Goats – The Young Thousands Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about how life chews up young people into old people, full of regret.

Life is full of evils, and when we meet them we are transformed. We can't return, but we can take solace in the fact that youth lives on.

The Mountain Goats – Sinaloan Milk Snake Song Lyrics 15 years ago
ever since I came here, all I could think about is water
last night they brought the fat lamb in from the fold
but I couldn't bring myself to do anything about it

i love this part because JD creates an expectation (the word slaughter), and then goes in a totally different direction. This is one of those idiosyncrasies that first put TMG on the radar for me.

The Mountain Goats – The Black Ice Cream Song Lyrics 15 years ago
I think paisleyblue's interpretation is very elegant.

for the sake of exhaustion however, i'd like to point out that there are a few kinds of ice cream that have a black color.

Probably the best candidate is licorice ice cream, which seems to be rare to find outside of the midwest. It seems like it's most often homemade since it's a traditional dish and is probably an acquired taste. JD has a preoccupation with the midwest so i think this is a strong possibility.

There are also a few japanese ice creams that are black in color, including one containng crushed sesame seeds. Since this is an older recipe it apparently has a taste and texture very different from what is normally thought of as ice cream. Also it stains your teeth black.

The Mountain Goats – Palmcorder Yajna Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about futility.
The narrator cannot control his future, he cannot control his friends, he cannot control himself.
The images of industry and modernity in each chorus are juxtaposed to an image of unstoppable mortality.

I think self-harm plays a role here.
I have not had the experience with meth songwriter apparently has, but it still moves me.
