I adore this song... and it introduced me to Basia Bulat! The way I imagine the story is that she crosses paths with a recent heartbreak in the opening of the song and it brings back memories of their relationship and her regret. She is pleading inside for him to accept her back as she knows she's done him wrong but she still loves him. She uses a plant metaphor for their relationship - one that she tried to care for and tend to so that it could grow solid roots and flourish, but she has failed. She did something wrong and now their green, blossoming love has (maybe) died before it could grow strong. She also likens herself to a dancing marionette... as if learning how to dance is like learning how to love. At first she didn't know how to dance, and her strings seemed broken, but now she does know and she wants to dance for and with him. He may have already given up on their relationship but she's asking him to give them another chance. |
