Neon Trees – Animal Lyrics 15 years ago
This is my first comment, but I have been a songmeanings.net voyeur for a while, and I am finally irritated enough to voice a few thoughts. Usually, I agree with most of the the stuff that people come up with, as many songs are straightforward enough, so I haven't felt the need to add my own duplicate interpretation.
The same is true with this song. I think there is a general consensus that this song is about being a relationship with someone who consumes you, so much that you feel as though they have eaten you alive, but that you cannot help but go back for more because of the high that you get from that. I think it is a unique take on a subject that has been done a million times over in music (and movies, and literature, and tv, etc), and a big plus is you just cannot help but get up and dance to it.
So why the irritation? The big drug analogy interpretation. Why is it that almost every love song, especially if it is about an intense relationship, is always interpreted by someone on here as being about drugs? Yes, the word chemicals is used in the song - in reference to the chemicals and hormones created by our own bodies when we are deeply attracted to another person. Why can't we just leave it at that? I get that you had a problem with drugs, and I hope you are getting help for that, but leave us just a few love songs untainted by the idea that it isn't really about love at all. If you have ever been crazy in love, you know that it can very much be an addiction, so I do understand making the analogy, but seriously, for all of us hopeless romantics out here whose only addiction has been another person, we want just a few songs for ourselves.
