Amazing track, my favourite from the album. Like most of TBM's songs it's kind of depressing but with a light at the end of the tunnel... there's a definite break-up theme to a lot of the songs on the album and coming to terms with change, moving on, etc. I think this song is about being in a failing relationship that's destructive to both people ("which one of us will leave here alive") and about the fragility of love ("your fingers breaking as I place them over mine"), how love isn't always enough to hold a relationship together. "The only thing I need is time to change your mind..." is a delusional statement, something you'd tell yourself to keep hope even when you know it's too late and the other person doesn't feel the same way anymore. ("I'm just a shadow in the light you leave behind")- maybe feelings of guilt or lack of self-worth, being left behind by the person who brought light to your life. ("When all that you know has fallen behind you, it's not the past that you're afraid to see")- when your life is turned upside down, realizing that it's really the uncertainty of the future that you're most afraid of, and needing to accept this before you can move on. ("There's nobody here and no one to find you...")- no one will save you but yourself. ("Tonight is forever")- "tonight" is the beginning of the rest of your life once you accept the truth??! In the bridge, ("It's always darker at the end of every answer...")- the truth is often not something we want to hear. ("Nothing waiting in the silence below")- there is nothing left, no more hope for the relationship, a dead end. Such an upbeat song yet some really heartbreaking lyrics- overall I think it's just about acceptance and looking forward to better things. |
