In my eyes, it's "So this is about ugly lovers, and this is about pretty songs"
1. Isaac has always seen himself as ugly - Why do you think he named his side project Ugly Casanova? Why do you think he turned to alcoholism for his early years?
2. He's always had a sarcastic view point about materialism (Diamonds On the Face of Evil), pretentiousness (Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset) and religion (Styrofoam Boots). He sees the stark contrast of ugly people and beautiful music, maybe some existential point of how he could get laid as a musician (he was 17 at the time I read somewhere) |

The videos of an alcoholic, so maybe it's someone he's looking out for like a friend whose found themselves in a rough patch (Nothings right when you're not here) or maybe it's the alcoholic's/person in a rough patch crying out for help from a certain person |

What I think is that (much like most of his other songs) it's just random occurances linked somehow, alot like life is in a way. To write like Dylan, you just need to stop thinking literally. Have an eye for a deeper meaning and make it cryptic. |

| Modest Mouse – Jesus Christ Was an Only Child Lyrics

From what 'biskutt' said, I think this song is about how even Jesus Christ was a little shit when he was a kid, just like every kid can be. Except this was Jesus Christ, someone who has influenced history to the modern day. Other than that, I think there's a reference to wasting your time on the internet playing MMO games raising 'gold' or 'credits' and not real money, but hey, this was 1997, so it might not be. The 'hide your kids' line could just be again, referencing to kids being little shits. I dunno. |
