@[dmlabuda:28825] I love making connections; however in this case maybe the connection is reversed, as Fool on the Hill was likely written in 1966 or 1967. Maybe the makers of "Ryan's Daughter" were influenced by the song and built Michael for it. Way back when I was in high school, we did a little song interpretation section in an English class. One guy in the class theorized that "The Fool on the Hill" was LBJ. The teacher didn't buy it, but obviously it was memorable to me. So I liked the first interpretation above with the possibility that the Fool on the Hill was MLK. Boy, there was some great music back then, wasn't there? |

| Warren Zevon – Mama Couldn't Be Persuaded Lyrics | 15 years ago |

Isn't this one truly autobiographical, about his parents, not the rhetorical "I"? Warren described his dad as a two-bit gangster--can't recall reading anything about his Mom... |

| Warren Zevon – Nighttime In The Switching Yard Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| First time I heard this tune, I remember thinking it was stupid. But it was very catchy and grew on me quickly. I've wondered a little bit if the "Switching yard" imagery had some sort of Jekyll and Hyde intimation, or possibly bisexuality with the midnight train going both ways. But I think I'm stretching things a bit, though with Warren very little could be ruled out. | |

TheThornBirds, let me start by saying I have loved your comments on Zevon songs--insightful, thoughtful, and wide ranging. Warren is indeed, missed, and he was always underappreciated. Why the indignation about lack of comments on "Hasten Down the Wind"? Most people don't see or hear near what you do, and I say it sincerely. I wouldn't mind hearing Neil Young try it, but don't let Dylan get near this one. The tenderness and sadness are almost overpowering in this song, to me it is about a relationship that seems it should be good, but somehow it's not clicking, the two can't hit on enough cylinders, can't relate the right way at the right time, and they know it. It breaks their hearts to part, but they know they have to because they just can't make it work and it will break their hearts to try to stay together. I think I'm going to head over to Bob Dylan now and see if you have a note on "Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again." |
