The message of the song is that suicide is not merely "self harm" because it affects everyone close to you. He's not saying he has no empathy towards his partner - shown by the line "And by no means am I belittling that, cause I know the troubles you've had" - what he is saying is that you need to open up about any problems your storing inside. The last lines "too many problems to list them, not enough people to listen" is ironic in a sense. It's supposed to be how his partner feels and yet the whole song has been about those people who are there and who are willing to help this person |
