Grouplove – Colours Lyrics 13 years ago
Hmm, I actually really think its a Be Yourself with subtle gay themes. The chorus sounds pretty straightforward about being yourself and so is the first verse, but that last line hints at something:

So when you see me flyin' by the planet's moon
You don't need to explain if everything's changed
Just know I'm just like you

With all the hysteria about gays destroying the world he just wants you to know they're people just like everyone else. Different, sure, but the same nonetheless.

So I pull this switch
The switch, the switch inside my head
And I see black black, green and brown brown brown brown,
And blue yellow violet's red

This could be sarcasm directed at the people who believe its a choice. Either way he sees his colors for what they are.

And suddenly a light appears inside my brain
And I think of my ways, I think of my days
And know that I have changed

The sudden epiphany where you realize you're a completely different person from a couple years ago, perhaps he didn't accept himself before but now he's no longer ashamed of being gay. Doesn't have to relate but thats how I see it.

So mistress, mistress
Have you been up to the roof?
He shot himself self, there's blood on the wall
'Cause he couldn't face the truth

This one just seemed weird until I realized it could be about the gay men who spend their whole lives denying who they are and trying to live a more acceptable charade, only to end up cheating on their wives (hence the use of the word mistress) and committing suicide.

Oh knock that down, leave the ground and find some space
And tell your friends friends, you'll be back again gain
Before it's too late

This is like a bit of friendly advice. Forget about your current troubles and try to think things through before you do anything drastic. The telling your friends part is pretty important when you feel suicidal. I think the "before its too late" speaks for itself.

Que chorus about accepting yourself, its not so bad at least you're healthy yadda yadda

So when you see us there, there out in the open road
You don't need to explain if everything's changed
Just know that you don't know

I think this is telling people who are afraid of acknowledging gay rights (or even gay people in general) and who think gay marriage is the beginning of the end of the moral fabric of society that you really don't know what's going to happen. No one does, but that's life, its unpredictable. Then at the outro he says "Yeah we call it... love". It's life, it's love. You may think it's hell on Earth but people are going to have to accept that this is real and its here to stay so deal with it.

Arcade Fire – The Suburbs Lyrics 14 years ago
Its funny you say that. I think in the song there's a bit of regret at him having taken for granted all the time spent in his youth playing in the Suburbs. He got bored often, they played games of war but still gt bored and its only ironic that he remembers even those times wistfully.

Dave Matthews Band – #41 Lyrics 14 years ago
Lol you tell her to open her mind but YOUR the one calling her gay and close minded for simply stating her opinion. The fact of the matter is that everyone interprets things differently and I think thats what Dave intends with his atypical and ambiguous lyrics. Take a bit of your own advise and be more receptive.

There are some truth people dont LIKE to believe. I'm not hating on Lupe, he's got all the respect in the world from me, but I agree that he belittles and doesnt bring in full detail (since it probably would sound too great in song form and would need a separate song in its own wight) the major and subtle politiks involved. Its all real complicated and no one group is completely at fault.

Haha, I have to agree on a lot of Point. Limbaugh however has said some things that would indicate otherwise....Nappy haired hoes anyone? But seriously, people need to be more open to information, thats what this song is partially about. Just some food for thought.

Well I cant say I dont agree with you there. I actually have seen a lot of 9/11 conspiracy documentaries and read online and discussed with MANY people the theories. In the end I always take things with a grain of salt but the theories repelled me so much that perhaps I was using rubbing alcohol. Anyways I agree that while you may not agree, communication is key and if concerns aren't brought up, investigated and brought to light then its the same as ignoring it and pretending it didnt happen. We need to take Lupe's advise and maintain a healthy skepticism while staying open to ideas and thoughts and LISTENING to other people. Having perspective can only help strengthen your opinions.

psh, people in uganda and mexico need the ability to stand up and speak. They cant do anything without the threat of death. In fact, almost everywhere this is a problem, but I think in accordance with the US, we HAVE the means and while our corruption isnt as obvious, upfront and seemingly not as malignant, we STILL need to stand up for ourselves. This song sort of reminds me of that movie-V for Vendetta. Great flick, I recommend anyone who enjoys this songs and its meaning to go check it out.

Basically it mean too eager, too green and naive. He's saying he's not used to the lifestyle and feels overwhelmed.

I gotta agree with you there, as everyone agree, the Robot definitely represents the society but exploring the repetition of body parts alludes to the fact that everyone is responsible for this giant evil robot they've created. The hood, the skanks, the corrupt police and the negligent white house. The phrase about not stepping on the children to me speaks about how this monstrosity they've created is literally killing the children. Awesome catch jumpoffit :)

I very much agree, as a Kid I listened to some questionable music, and it wasnt always rap, but most times I hardly paid attention to lyrics and was easily pleased with a good beat. Luckily, ever since hearing Lupe, I've taken more note of lyrics and found myself drawn to his more positive and intellectual messages. Anyways, could anyone here explain what a D-Boy is? I couldnt find anything that seemed to make sense...

Ya know that would work if all of Lupe's Songs didn't show a depth and intellectual thought that far surpassed most rappers these days. Lupe isnt half as pretentious as people like you I'm sorry to say.

Well nothing I have to say that someone hasnt already covered once or twice..Though I would like to note that "A match made in Heaven set the fires in Hell" could be an allusion to Satan falling from heaving to hell. He it seems more like a parallel between kids like Michael Young who are born innocent (An angel like Satan) but falls from grace into the illicit underworld of the street (Hell being born and perpetuated by the travesty of the angel's fall and God's banishment).

On another note, does anyone know what "That was just the eye of the Unger/
Felix, 'cause he is the cleanest amongst the younger" means? I looked around online and someone said it was a reference to Hurricane Felix in the carribean, correlating with his weather word play but it still sort of confuses me. Probably I dont know for the life of me what "Unger" could mean..

Passion Pit – Moth's Wings Lyrics 15 years ago
Alright so I was listening and it hit me this could be seen as someone who's struggling to cope with their mother dying, shutting out his friends, and getting angry at those that try to help.

Dear friend, as you know
Your flowers are withering
-Flowers withering is a sign of oncoming winter, which is symbolic of death
Your mother's gone missing
-Many have said the correct lyrics are "missing" which would be who'd died
Your leaves have drifted away
-an allusion to fall, this person was forced to cope and mature, and could be acting coldly towards people.
But the clouds are clearing up
-the hard times/winter have ended
And I've come reveling
Burning incandescently
-this person shows up trying to shine some light and be positive about the situation
Like a bastard on the burning sea
-this person is seen as a "bastard" trying to meddle in his problems

You're just like your father
Buried deep under the water
-like his father this person is drowning in sorrows
You're resting on your laurels
And stepping on my toes
-now he's being confrontational, acting smug and being a general douche
Whose side are you on?
What side is this anyway?
-this person doesn't understand why they're fighting in the first place
Put down your sword and crown
Come lay with me on the ground
-a plea to stop fighting, get off your pedestal and just relax, enjoy life again

You come beating like moth's wings
Spastic and violently
Whipping me into a storm
Shaking me down to the core
-he comes and just suddenly and spastically start ruffing the other's feather
But you run away from me
And you left me shimmering
Like diamond wedding rings
Spinning dizzily down on the floor
-he ends up running from the person, choosing to not deal with the other and wanting to sulk instead. The other person, who might be more (or wants to be), feels abandoned.

Passion Pit – Moth's Wings Lyrics 15 years ago
I thought at first that moth's wings are a lot less beautiful than their butterfly counterparts perhaps hinting that the way s/he's acting is disgraceful and unbecoming, but when I thought on it I also remembered that moths have markings on their wings that resemble huge eyes to scare away predators. So maybe thats like this person's putting up a front to scare or keep people at a distance, when s/he's actually much more fragile than they appear. Also moth's tend to have wings that blend into the enviornment, so it could be taken the other way that they're trying to hide or run from something.

And I've come reveling
Burning incandescently
Like a bastard on the burning sea
Since fire (burning) and incandescence are mentioned, maybe
the person who's acting is so angry because they're attracted to this bright and shining person but hates how they bring up his personal problems, might even be mad at themselves for always starting confrontations with said person

Idk, right now its just a jumble of thoughts, but if anyone wants to find some correlations or meaning to the use of Moths there ya go.
