Swans – I Was a Prisoner in Your Skull Lyrics 13 years ago
Quite simply, the fact of how everything is just weird, and the sensation of realizing this is beyond any of it, almost weirdly spiritual. "Fucked up" contains the weird meaning of how resentful we can become in the face of weirdness. Anything can describe this weirdness, because it is anything and everything. God is (would be) weird. Life is weird. Meaning is weird. Me typing this on some thing called a computer is weird. You understanding the weirdness is weird. Here, just ask yourself, "why?" and you might get the weird idea.

Porcupine Tree – Even Less Lyrics 14 years ago
Pretty sure this is about Steven being disillusioned by the lie of fame and rock and roll myth, and questioning his place in life.

Pavement – Stop Breathing Lyrics 15 years ago
Huh, I always thought it was like Hummer by SP because they both have that chilled feeling and break after a couple verses and choruses. Weird considering the whole Smashing Pumpkins vs. Pavement thing.

Brand New – Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis Lyrics 15 years ago
It is about his fear of "burning out," or losing control. At the same time, even the superficial meaning wears that idea well. It's falling into temptation, be it a girl, drugs, or making it big. It's all connected, and it makes it more common than we realize. That said, this song is so sad and muddy that I don't listen to it often, but it's a killer when I do.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Thirty Three Lyrics 15 years ago
You know, just because someone has a religious take on a song doesn't mean he's a fundy wacko, or even Christian. Billy's been known to reference the Bible, "like old Job." Besides, it's ingrained in society that 90% of people believe Jesus existed in some way or another. This was written in 1995, those theories are probably more recent.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Oh Comely Lyrics 15 years ago
My dad and I were talking about this album, and he summed this song up as Jeff's indictment of the Nazis, or in a way power whores. They get the riches in life, but they ended up dying pathetically, like Anne Frank did.
"Say what you want to say
And hang for your hollow ways
Moving your mouth to pull out all your miracles
For me"
is purely a huge stab at how futile they were/are in the end when compared to truly beautiful people... like Anne Frank. Basically, I get this rather pissed off and kind of glorious sense of karma from this album, enough that I'd mosh to some of these songs haha.

The Smiths – Unhappy Birthday Lyrics 15 years ago
I honestly think this can be an attack at irrational arrogance and loss of innocence as a result of rejection. The protagonist is wishing all of this harm against this ex and lets it slip up his relationships with people (or pets) that do matter, yet he calls her the evil one. All he has evidence for why she deserves all this is that she lied. That's nothing compared to self-harm, being unsympathetic to the idea of her dying, and wishing she gets hung over. It's not necessarily condoning what she's done, but his claims aren't exactly pure either. Knowing Morrissey, this is probably a song of self-loathing and shame rather than just being angry at an ex. Plus, he's never blunt or obvious with what he writes.
