I see it as the speaker is breaking up with their lover. Over the course of their relationship they had realized that the two of them aren't meant for each other. The only thing that they share and has kept them together is their mutual fear of being alone. The singer sees this reality as something bleak and while the singer wishes it wasn't the case, they have come to accept it and have finally decided to end their relationship for both the singer and their lover's benefit. What really troubles the singer is that their partner may not want to accept that interpretation of their relationship, but the singer is nearly certain their partner knows it's true too, but their partner is hurt by the singers thoughts and won't reciprocate the singer's notions. This shadow of doubt makes the singer's decision even more difficult, but they re-firm their position by insisting over and over that their partner knows this must happen too. |
