| Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Follow You Into the Dark Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
I have 1 questions. I get the meaning of the song in general, it's just 2 specific lines that confuse me. 1. "if there's no one beside you" when your soul embarks blabla... Why does he say that? ^ If he's with her, like dating or married or in love, shouldnt there be no one else beside her? Or is this like unrequited love? I just dont understand whose soul could possibly be beside this woman's besides gibbard's. #2. son fear is the heart of love, "so I never went back" dont tell me about the nun's words, that can have many interpretations, but the never going back, does that mean he decided he didnt believe anymore/left catholic school because he didn't like what the nun had to say about fear and love? Obviously his song is about being fearless when in love to follow your love into the dark, or maybe its about overcoming fear for love, I dont know, I just want to know if he's saying he disagrees with the nun (never went back to believing) or agrees (never went back to the way he was before he was enlightened by what the nun said). Two opposite meanings but both possibilities! Either way, the most beautiful love song ever written. |

| yea i see what you mean, it probably is from a man's mind but just a thought! and thanks, im pretty sure that is what she means by cleavage, summer means separation, not breasts, and why would female's cleavage make him miss her? only separation could do that. | |

| yes i think youre exactly right, and the reported speech thing, thats exactly what i thought too! its definitely right, i can hear ingrid talking like that, and the i think that i like her, i figure the same thing. maybe the "she" is an ex of this guy's who still loves him and is like "cant you see she doesnt love you? youre a masochist for falling for her." | |

actually these are all slightly wrong. correct version!!!: Far from the evergreen of old Assam Far from the rainfall on the trails of old saigon straight from the poster town of scorn and ritz To bring you the wilder side of gold and glitz Run neon tiger there's a lot on your mind They promised just to pet you, but don't you let them get you Away, away, oh one Under the heat of the southwest sun You took to the spotlight like a diamond ring You came from the woodwork in the hopes they might Redeem themselves from poor decisions to win big Run neon tiger there's a lot on your mind They'll strategize and name you, but don't you let them tame you You're far too pure and bold To suffer the strain of the hangman's hold I don't wanna be kept, I don't wanna be caged, I don't wanna be damned, oh hell I don't wanna be broke, I don't wanna be saved, I don't wanna be S.O.L. Give me rolling hills so tonight can be the night that I stand among the thousand thrills Mister, cut me some slack 'Cause I don't wanna go back, I want a new day and age Come on girls and boys, everyone make some noise! Run neon tiger there's a price on your head They'll hunt you down and gut you, I'll never let them touch you Away, away, oh one I'm begging you neon tiger, run Under the heat of Under the heat of Under the heat of the southwest sun Neon Tiger There's a lot on your mind |

| Motion City Soundtrack – Mary Without Sound Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| i dont think its about suicide.., I'm pretty sure Mary is the same girl from My Favorite Accident. He says things about her in that song like "coming back without a sound" "can't swim in the silence of your skin" "up close the sound remains the same" The first quote being the most important. I think this song is about someone he once had somehting with and he pines and pined for her but then he sort of gave up and moved on, right when she decides to come back. And he sees that after all this time she's completely different than who he thought she was and maybe always was. Atleast that's my interpretation but i'm biased because i'm in a similar situation. | |

| I think He's talking about a friend, and how she's moving on in her life and he wishes he could do that but he has a hard time changing himself, he thinks it would be a rather difficult feat to change himself and also feels kind of attacked that his friend wants him to change with him, like what's wrong with the way he his now? but deep down he wants to change too | |

first of all it's "we can bury our lungs in these songs we have sung/ And we can bury out limbs underneath all these hymns" and it's about missing someone. Missing "those days" and oh how they went by so fast. Also he counts his mistakes while waiting for her call. Basically, he screwed up and it's hard to see a reason to keep going "until we see those days again." |

| Regina Spektor – Eet Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
has anyone actually thought about what "Eet" is? on old typewriters it is like a backspace key. This song is about wishing there was a "backspace" on life. It's like that feeling when you forget the words to one of your favorite songs and you realize how long its been since you last heard it and how much ahs gone on in your life since then. Someone's deciding whether or not to steal. He opens a window just to feel the chill. He hears that outside a small boy just started to cry 'Cause it's his turn, but his brother won't let him try. these lines have so much meaning. Someone is deciding to steal and they don't really know why just to feel the chill of doing something wrong. They don't know how their life got that way but its down the wrong path. The boy crying showed him how his life should be, how he should be maybe with his little brother, it brings him back to reality that his life is not really that bad and he can turn it around. He can press "Eet" on his life. He wishes he could go back in time to when he was a little boy playing with his older brother... it's all about eet |

| Regina Spektor – Chemo Limo Lyrics | 15 years ago |

i think its obvious that crispy crispy benjamin franklin is money and its saying that basically she's maybe a single mother with naught but ehr kids to care for and she's had to work so she had to pay a baby-sitter so maybe she doesn't really know her kids as well as she wishes and now she has to die. Notice she realizes (oh my god) barbara you look just like my mom. and i think that's like saying she wishes she had spent more time with her kids so she realized things like that before. it's also sad because she'll never see if she ends up looking just like her mom in the end. she'll never see her grow up. I think the 1st chorus is "i can't afford chemo like i can't afford a limo" she wants to stop with the chemo and just die. it's sad but it's true, cancer is an uncomfortable way to die and prolonging it with chemo doesn't seem like and option since she'll die anyway and the financial state of her family isn't that great. She'd rather stay out of the hospital and "go out in style." Just live life to the fullest until she's too weak to do so. The dream was about her dying and giving up (in the limo) and she wakes up and decides to fight the cancer with the chorus (no thankyou). I like how she still has hope for life "you know i PLAN to retire some day" as in she will live to retire and she isn't going to die and just give up the fight like in her dream. I think maybe the thought of her children is her will to live :) as much as this song is sad, it is hopeful as well. |

| Ingrid Michaelson – Porcelain Fists Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
correction its "i feel the sand slipping away from underneath our toes" and "locked in the bathroom stall" ok so to analysis, i think everyone here is wrong no offense. I feel like its 2 girls best friends, one is struggling with a mistake they made while the other is trying to help her. The girls dad is the one who says "follow your heart [and] swallow your pride" to try to give advice to help her but he's not very good because he doesn't know the whole story but the best friend (who's singing) does. So I walked into your eyes without a raincoat on And in the salty sea, I find you're all but gone. - her friend is crying but she is still comfortable with ehr (without a raincoat) she looks into her eyes and tells her she's still the same person, she sees no change even with her mistake (i find youre all but gone) Locked in the bathroom stall Your back against the wall. - she's not listening to her friend she's gone and locked herself in the bathroom as the friend is trying to console her Cold tiles beneath your knees, Your body broke your fall. - she's crying sitting on the dirty bathroom floor and her friend is trying to say that what she's doing isn't doing her any favors (your body broke your fall) Spitting into your own reflection gazing back - yet she's still disgusted with herself Inside your porcelain fists, your palms begin to crack. - she's fragile, and starting to break but before she shatters her friend is trying to save her, theyve only begun to crack, i think this is saying before she gets lost in her sorrows too far she's trying to fix the problem at the start, heal her before the wound gets too big to control. So take my hand your treading water And I feel sand slipping underneath my toes - she's saying, i'm trying to help you so take it because pretty soon i wont be able to help (i feel the sand slipping away) they'll both be swept out to see and it'll be much harder to get back to shore so take my hand now, she says Nobody knows, (youre treading water) youre not drowning yet, she's telling her friend it is not yet too late, get over it now before it consumes your life because right now youre still hanging on Where is it she goes? When those sad eyes start to close - she's sympathizing with her, she knows she doesn't quite understande what it feels like (where is it she goes when those sad eyes close) nobody gets it, but as a best friend, she's doing the best she can to help i know exactly how it feels to be in the narrators shoes. |

| Regina Spektor – Summer in the City Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| her wanting to rub up against strangers just shows how desperate she is to feel, i think i felt like coming and crying does mean coming in the sexual term of the word, but i think regina talks about sex in this song as a metaphor for love, as if they are equivalent, in a mature manner, she probably believes in not having sex accept as an expression of true love for one another and uses it in her songs that ways. the girl wanted to come as in find another man to have sx with but she also wanted to cry over the man she lost and couldnt choose whether shes ready to move on or not, but it doesnt matter because hes long gone from the city... | |
| Regina Spektor – Summer in the City Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| i think the castrated men who want to feel is about someone taking away your ability to feel, and she wants to get back on the scene and try some cleavage and find her gal pals that she neglected while she was obsessed with her boyfriend but he messed her up so bad she cant feel like the "castrated men" someone took away her ability to feel, andthe strangers are her once friends and she doesnt realize how long its been since shes spoken to them and really been with them and connected and shes just changed so much through this one guy that theres no recognition in their eyes of who she is anymore. and they also dont understand her. shes jsut angry that its possible for someone to take away someone elses ability to feel, to feel love as regina is so obssessed with love, i love this song | |

| Regina Spektor – That Time Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| i agree i think its interesting like the short story "The Lottery" ahve you ever read it? its like she speaks about tangerins and ceral boxes and pigeons and drugs and being sick and OD'ing all in the same tone, its like supposed to make you think, wait thats messed up, but be like oh thats how people view it every day in some places, jsut like The Lottery is about how you think its sounds crazy to kill people randomly for on reason when you read it in a story like that, but think about it, there is mindless killing around the world every day, and when you ehar about that you don't feel disgusted and weirded out and even confsued and riled up as you do when you finish this story. i think regina had the same motive | |
| Regina Spektor – That Time Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| i think its jsut simply about a downward spiral from fun to dangerous and wrong and the classic question that baffles people of all ages: when is it time to stop? | |
| Regina Spektor – Hotel Song Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
i disagree with everyone haha i think when she says "whos the girl wearin my dress?" shes talkin about herself, i figured out her number (not phone but the number of things shes done wrong) but "i dont know her adress", she doesnt know where she lives or belongs, maybe its like home is where the heart is and she doesnt yet know where her heart lies. shes done and seen a lot of things (cocaine vegas the works maybe just been around people even her parents, into that stuff) and yet she thinks shes a child sometimes, she just wants to get away because its too soon her dreams of owls and what not just mean shes goin through life havin a good time but then she wakes up sometimes (like wakes up her conscience not literal from a sleep) and thinks what about my friends? what about a goal? when am i gonna get married? where im going? like she needs to get out of this cycle of the bad life and get back to living and figure out who she is. and shes using this person that she wants to "know" an "show" her world to stop learning about herself and learn about someone else, shes trying to avoid the hard part of life: figuring out who you are really are and where youre headed in life. i think the smile she bought means she bought it from him, as in she's never truely happy because shes seeing people working in the hotel doing what they want to do and shes just living life like its some big vacation never going towards a career and she wishes she could be happy in a stable job like them. but i do agree with loverly23 "wanting some stability in your life--in the form of a home, a belief, or the promise of a constant lover/friend/relative--but not being able to obtain it...much like a hotel cannot obtain a permanent resident. " kudos |

| Regina Spektor – Field Below Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
i feel like shes relating a "field" she wants to see to something shes waiting for to cheer her up, and the "darkness covered snow" to like alaska in winter when the sun doesnt come up and she wishes it would just be a field where alaska is what shes dealing with waiting to pass, its relating a bad thing in life to a long winter basically when your sick of it and you just want spring again its just about dealing with someone and kind of being impatient, its just ehr emotions poring out maybe she tried to get over something with this song |
|
| Regina Spektor – Samson Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I think this song is so beautiful, i think all regina's songs are about the same thing, how todays world doesnt value love the way it should and how love, the most powerful thing humans can feel, is often overlooked. "You are my sweetest downfall" - she's made mistakes but never has she been so sorry "I loved you first, I loved you first Beneath the sheets of paper lies my truth" - she's trying to tell the truth that she loved him, its like saying the bible dosnt cover the whole story, she really loved him and the bible cut out that part of the story only looking at the part where she makes a mistake but not as their relationship on the whole, they were truly in love. "I have to go, I have to go Your hair was long when we first met" - she doesnt want to look at what she did to him because she feels so much remorse for her actions (but he wont let her go because he forgives her) "Samson went back to bed Not much hair left on his head He ate a slice of Wonderbread And went right back to bed" - when he woke up and found his hair was gone he just went on, he understood and he immediately forgave, he just went right back to bed, i always picture delilah crying here and him showing rather than saying that its ok. i picture no exchange of words but an understood forgiveness, although delilah doesnt forgive herself "And history books forgot about us And the Bible didn't mention us The Bible didn't mention us, not even once"- the bible doesnt tell the whole story, shes saying the bible didnt mention US their relationship and their LOVE as is the most important part to Regina "Beneath the stars came falling on our heads But they're just old light They're just old light" - just another way of syaing its ok, you are forgiven "Samson came to my bed Told me that my hair was red Told me I was beautiful and came into my bed" - instead of coming and saying its ok i forgive you he first made it clear that he still loves her and he doesnt care that his hair is gone because he still has her beautiful red hair, he came to her bed to console her still crying over what she did "I cut his hair myself one night A pair of dull scissors and the yellow light" - she isnt denying what she did she gave herself full blame and is clearly disgusted with herself, the dull scissors is like saying she picked those because she didnt know why she did it, she didnt really want to, and there was some hope that it wouldnt work, that the dull scissors wouldnt cut through, and the yellow light shows unnatural light just as it felt wrong to her to do it "He told me that I'd done all right And kissed me until the morning light, the morning light And he kissed me until the morning light" - i feel like this parts really cute, like he looks athis hair and is like you did an alright job almost jokingly like nice haircut haha and hes totally ignoring the fact that his strength went with his hair and he doesnt need words to express his love, he stays with her all night kissing her until she stops crying, and sitll she cant believe the bible and the history books didnt tell the story of their love that he would forgive her for what she did. this is a story of pure complete just true love "We couldn't break the columns down No, we couldn't destroy a single one" - these books are more interested in a story like breaking the columns than love, and its not about the columns, he never really brought them down, he lost his strength but he kept his love, i feel like its saying the bible is changing the story to entertain rather than show the importance of love because thats not valued in todays society just like stories today stretching the truth because people dont want to hear about whats real. ""i loved you first"" her last "sorry" shes done all she could to express her remorse i feel like regina is trying to say "what if" this was the story of samson and delilah? stop thinking about the story of betrayal and try to look at the love beneath it all, this is the most beatuful story of the strongest love i have ever heard. i love regina sorry this is so long but i hope you got something out of it |

| Regina Spektor – Buildings Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I think he was a caring husband who was more responsible than his wife and cared for her deeply and never got mad at her when she was drunk but was just frustrated with the marriage. I love the beautiful imagery of him propping her up in his car comfortably agains the window so she can get some air and holding her hair back as she gets sick from the alcohol. It is just beautiful to think about how loving her husband must be to be able to support someone in their most disgusting pathetic state. obviously he is unhappy and i think when he talks about the buildings hes pretty much thinking outloud to himself. I think he thinks about suicide sometimes but his love for his wife is the only thing he has keeping him from doing it. Its like hes sitting there holding his wifes hair back thinking, i hate this and i could end it so quick, buildings are so tall, but then he looks at her with pity and love and holds on and gives her time to change back to the way she was once. she'd wake up next to him and try to remember what happened and realize how much stress she put her husband through the night before, she is addicted to partying i think not necessarily alcohol, and i dont think she knows why she does it, but i think its because she's bored with her marriage even though she loves him, its just that something in their relationship changed, in her, and she needs to fix it. But no matter what he'd forgive her and tell her it was ok. then her conscience talks about the buildings and thats her thinking how bad she feels about what shes doing and putting her husband through. she wants to fix the problem so she begs him for time syaing she can change and make things better. he always believes her and never had intention of leaving her and always gives her time. she knows hes depressed and just gets scared that she might cause him to commit suicide. thats her last warning. but the narrator says that it takes time to fix things, no one can give it, no can take it, you just need to wait it out and use it. It may take ages of the same old crap before things get better. the only way she knows how to make up for what she did and prove to him that shes sorry and still loves him is to stay home and clean the house for a surprise when he comes home from work, i think this is so sweet! i think it says coffee so many times because she has a hangover and she uses coffee to get rhough it and clean for him. and as she's doing it "she rots at the core" feeling horrible about herself thinking shes such a bad person for doing what she does to her husband. Her husband though would remember that she loves him and keep on living barely clinging on through his depression. she calls time a gift because she thinks he has every right to leave her and expects him to. and the end of the song is just saying that it goes on and on like this for a very long time, it may even get worse, but eventually their time ends. the narrator doesn't say how. it might get better, they might divorce, one might die or commit suicide, or they might die together, maybe even happy, that is for you to decide. this is a beautiful song about COMMITMENT HOPE and UNCONDITIONAL LOVE and ofcourse TIME |
