| Garbage – Drive You Home Lyrics

This was always the feeling I had about it too (well, replace dad with mum).
Either way, what this song will always mean most to me is the day I first heard it. Bought beautifulgarbage (great album BTW), took it home, stuck it on and listened through it. Got to this song, stopped the idle internetting I was doing and listened. Stopped the CD player afterwards, curled up on my bed and bawled my eyes out for the next half hour. No other song, before or since, has come close to knocking me sideways like that. |

@zeppelinbeatle52: I saw Ben Folds live touring with The Divine Comedy once. It was epic. (Ben Folds came out to sing Your Daddy's Car; Neil Hannon then returned the favour on Brick.) |

Wonderful piece of Daily Mail style paranoia about danger lurking around every corner. Probably in the form of a roaming gang of chavs. |

I always thought this one was about death. The objects are metaphors, mementos of times and places and people lost and forgotten. The "sheepskin screen" seemed like an analogue for the white light of heaven - nailed on by the "green pleasant land" line - whereupon he is reunited with those lost memories. |

Still remember when I first heard this live before VFTCM came out. It got to the "He left the villa to his mistress in Marseilles" line, and me and my mate just turned and stared at each other, jaws dropped. Simply an amazing piece of songwriting. |

Pretty sure at least some of this is about James' Black Thursday; the day their manager quit, Tim announced he was going off to make Booth And The Bad Angel, Larry quit the band, and - most significantly - they discovered the bureaucratic snafu that left them with a £250,000 unpaid tax bill ("It all belongs to Caesar"). |

Tim Booth spoke about this on Faith And Music - it's about the moment he and Jim saw through John Yarr's lies during their involvement in the Lifewave sect, a cult leader who preached a hugely restrictive and celibate lifestyle while screwing around with some of the female membership. More generally, it's about spiritual leaders who become so focused on their own spirituality that they forget who they are as physical beings with human vices. |
